My Channel 15 Shorted
« on: September 06, 2010, »
Hi,

I was creating a plug connection into channel 15 and my wiring had crossed into each other. There was short spark and now the channel 15 remains on all the time.  Can you please tell me which component on the LE V5 has shorted that needs to be replaced?  So far everything else is working fine - the test sequence etc.

Thanks
Dilip

Greetings,,,

If the led for channel 15 is off, but the output on the ac line is on...

I would try pulling the opto chip 859-MOC3023, out, without the LE being plugged in, of course.  Then see if you get ac output on the channel.  That would perhaps point towards a stuck triac.

Yep - Pop/Crackle + Always On = 99.9% blown TRIAC... Sorry...

That sucks! sorry you blew a channel out. It is likely a triac but do pull the opto and try it just to be sure. It is easier to pop a new opto in if that happen to be it.

Got it.

I pulled out the opto (I guess it is the 6pin IC) on channel 15 and the output was still on.
So it looks like it is the triac that is blown.

Man, that is a difficult one to handle - unscrewing from the heat sink... unsoldering etc...

But at least I know what is busted.

Thanks for the help, guys.

Cut it off leaving the legs seperate and unsolder ine leg at a time to keep from damaging the pcb. Lots of heat and let it get good and hot all the way before very lightly pulling. It should come very easy if not stop or you will pull traces.
