Owww I also forgot last year I did a static display with my truck and lights behind it to make it look like it was dragging the ground,so this year coming up I wanna do lights on the wheels to make it look like its rolling and set up twinkle on the lights behind it so it looks like the sparks are actually moving.

I play with toys.   :)  The top truck is (as yet) unmodified as you’d receive from the store.  The lower fire truck is almost ready for plastic rebuilding (it’s broken up pretty bad) and paint/chrome/gold.   The circuit boards control all of the lighting, the bigger board does the headlights, tail lights, side lights plus all the red/blue blinky emergency lighting.  The smaller circuit board controls the “rotators,” six red SMT LED’s  arranged in a circle to emulate the old style rotating lights.  Just below the PCB’s is a hacked up LED, the top flattened slightly then drilled out just a bit to hold a fiber optic strand.   The other end of the fiber is polished so it’ll shine brightly, then the whole thing is hidden inside heat shrink tubing.  This is the best method I could come up with to make “pinpoint” lighting, especially for the vehicles I do in smaller sizes like 1:24 and 1:87 (HO) scales.   Due to the amount of detail (and due to my disability – I can’t do anything for more than 15/20 minutes at a time, sometimes nothing for days on end) I’ll take a year to do a vehicle, start to finish.

Wow, I really love all the pictures and cool toys --- certainly making me jealous!

A couple of my hobbies I enjoy are:

- coaching volleyball -- I coach 7-9 grade girls competitive club volleyball.   This consumes a lot of my time,
  between practices, clinics and tournaments.

- conifers -- yes, I plant them and have a number of rare or collectible dwarf conifers.  I have over 100 trees in my yard and
a friend in the area who has been generous and given me many unique conifers to plant.  My favorites are the varieties that
turn bright yellow in the winter months.

Other Hobbies??

Well when I am not living on DLA (which is most of the time  ::))

Here is a video from last spring I put together https://vimeo.com/42812333

The video was done with my narrow gauge engines and in honor of my buddy's birthday who pass away a few years back. He was also the reason why I had the two engines in the video.

A new hobby that started last year and I love doing it, working with students to build combat robots. Last year was our first competition, we did well and one of my son's placed 5th. This year, we have more kids who want to get involved (70+) from three different schools working hard to get all the combots built for Robo-Games.

The reason I say hobby and not job, it is all volunteer.

 I also love to BBQ!

Here is a video of me and my friends doing our thing:

(At about 55 seconds in, I'm the rotund fellow walking out the door in the background.)

I help organize that event, held every mid-July. We get about 100-150 people coming to run live steam trains.

I also edit the hobby's magazine, but that's a job, not a hobby ;-) ...

Not sure which picture you are referring to, but that is one thing that I love about Idaho, There is beautiful country everywhere, with temps in the 100s in the summer and sub zeros in the winter. I could do without the sub zero these days. The older I get the less I like the cold!!!

Hmm...since it did not bring the pic with it my first post made no sense. :)

So my other hobby is anything out on the lake, but mostly wake boarding, skiing, barefooting.

I also enjoy software development, video games, learning more about electronics, and wood working.

Used to be that way too. I used to tournment ski. We had a Ski Nautique (that I really miss), but 2 shoulder surgeries and I had to give that up. Too many face plants barefooting (those really hurt)!  <fp. and driving for a wake boarder is a boat drivers worst nightmare!  ;)

I really do miss those days!  :'(

I was a pyrotechnician and made various devices like drivers for wheels (and the wheels themselves) comets, and shells.
1st picture is the first shoot of the Northwest Pyrotechnic Arts Assoc. club that we formed in 2004 with Mount Rainier in the background.

2nd is a Caprice wheel with 10 drivers.

Most of the speeders, it turns out, are Brits (both actual people from the United Kingdom and North Americans who model Brit engines) ... they love to run their trains too fast.

Most of my peeps work hard at making their engines go prototypically slow ... now that's difficult (also easier on the old bones when you're chasing on foot).

I also enjoy software development, video games, learning more about electronics, and wood working.

Like many of you I have more hobbies than I can afford and now adding in the blinky blinky!

Woodworking bit me in 7th grade and I've invested in the whole shop full of tools, gone off to classes for hand tools, and am pretty much in the final stretch of the big tools a few more upgrades and will be done for life for the machines.

From Wood magazine plans:

For the wife's older hobby, all from my head:

Something why wife saw in a magazine that I made her, the front is a mirror:

The moulding came from a local cabinet manufacturer surplus store, this was a mother-in-law present for her steins display obviously.

and for the sons knick knacks, out of American Beech with "tung oil" finish:

Photography was another big hit in my youth, used to take drives just to take photos while the wife to be slept in the car or on the road when we got to the destination!  Close to D600 so all my old lenses can be used again, not that they are anything special.

Would love to learn to _really_ cook well, and my son wants to be a chef and can probably cook better than anyone in the immediate family at 14 already.

Electronics are on my list to learn in life, being able to do what RJ goes someday and understand and hack whatever it is I could come up with.  Made a couple of things off plans on the internet to monitor my power meter at one time, fixed a few computer mainboards by replacing soldered components.

Computers and programming, some of the first money I made was selling assembly language programs to one of the computer magazines for Apple computers in the day.  Haven't kept up all my skills but can read a few different languages and muck my way around.  Even learned cobol in school for you old timers!

Current projects on that are home automation, ir transceiving to control lights and such with the home automation, a butt on the couch sensor to help with the lights.  Soon to add detailed power monitoring.

Love to learn to weld sometime, yet another hobby to learn..

Square foot gardening, perennial flowers, greenhouse, bike riding, lots of video games (grew up with pong), fishing (have not bought a boat yet),  watching 3d movies in the home theature, car stereo.. Yeah,  more hobbies than I can afford!

It's sad when a long time co-worker retires and their only hobby was work.  I could win the lottery today and be busier than ever!

arw01:

I really like that first project -- the carrying box with dowel joinery and curved ends.

My woodworking skills also started in seventh grade -- general shop -- and I made a couple of nice projects in eighth-grade woodshop. Then I diverted over to photography and offset lithography (my high school had a printshop).

I was building my elevated backyard railroad back in 2003 and realized I'd be using lots of dangerous tools -- circular saw, table saw and chop saw -- and then realized that my shop safety classes had been 35 years earlier. So I went to an adult education woodworking class held one evening a week at the local high school. Built a really nice oak end table as my finishing project (and then went on to build the railway).

But I just don't have the time to do woodworking any more, unless a specific project rears its head. I got rid of the table saw (too much room, too little precision).

Before I got married, I had no hobbies; my wife encouraged me to get some and they've made my transition to "under-employment" that much easier.
