Title: My wife and her (cases)
Post by: sirloinofbeef001 on April 08, 2011,
My wife came home the other day from work and heard me complaining about needing cases for my LE's.. So she went to the store and bought me some cases from somewhere and asked me to try them out. I told her they had to be waterproof and she said these are.So up to my jacuzzi I went and put one in the tub and filled it up with water ( the tub, not the case )and it is totally waterproof. So take a look at this...  :o

If I may ask what type of containers are those and where did she buy them from. They look kinda neat especially if you add a couple of extra RGB LEDs to make them glow at night.

I'm not sure where she got them at. They will work though for me. Easy enough to mount and easy enough to open. I like your idea of the leds in the box for a little extra sparkle..I'll see where they vane from and post it when she gets home from work..

Its from target.. Its made by oxo softworks. The product is tough and durable so no need to worry about that aspect of it. Anyway, target for 11.95.

Hey chrisatpsu, I checked their site and that's the biggest they had.

For that price I would stick with the CG-1500.

More appropriate enclosure, which is machined already for the output and input cording.

Machining those cases (drilling holes) might be a nightmare since traditional very transparent plastics are challenging to cut and drill without shattering.

The CG-1500 is a $20 value.  They are well worth the $10-$13 plus shipping.  I have tried to save money on cases in the past only to be severely frustrated with my decision.  After having used them for a year the only case that I think is better is the cases used by LOR for the CTB16PC but they cost $24 and don't work for LE's.

The true value in all this is having a supporting wife!  Now that is priceless!

My goodness, what have I started here.. Its just an idea, an alternative to the way everyone else does things. I like the idea of seeing whats inside the box..If it fails then I will pay to fix the problem.. Its just all fun.. 8)

I also like the fact that you can see the LE in action, we put a lot of work on making one and it would be nice to show it off insted of hiding it in a gray box. The main concern is how easy is it going to be to drill the holes need to run the wiring. Keep us posted Please I may want to try them if they can be drilled without cracking. After all this is DIY and your not going to get more DIY than that unless you can mold Plexiglas yourself. ;D

I would try a stepped drill, that is what I used when I made my radio sign (plexiglas), and I didn't have any problems with cracking, just go easy on the pressure when drilling.

Clear is cool.  Unfortunately in my neighborhood it would probably make them more of a target for theft.

drill bits for plastic dont have that auger type piece on the tip of the bit to dig into the plastic. if you can find those kind of bits,  they should be fine.
plus, for extra safety, place masking tape over the area do be drilled, before you drill.

those are tips i got from a place that sells a lot of plastic items.

Your fittings are not 100% water proof they make one that is I do not have any here but when I go to work on Wednesday  I will post a pic and link of some that are. They look great by the way. ;D

the fitting to the box is water tight. The hole in the bottom isn't. ima put some foam inserts in those..
Title: Re: My wife and her (cases)
Post by: Jeffl on April 10, 2011,
I think the fittings are as water tight as you need as long as they are mounted vertical.  A little air movement is good so it can dry out if it gets condensation in it.
Title: Re: My wife and her (cases)
Post by: sirloinofbeef001 on April 10, 2011,

Would that be a correct assumption? The cg1500 is water tight and air tight. Does it have condensation problem?
Title: Re: My wife and her (cases)
Post by: Jeffl on April 10, 2011,
The CG-1500 is not air and water tight.  It has openings in the bottom with a foam piece to cover the holes.  After cords are installed there are small openings that might still let moister in.

I have never had condensation problems with containers that don't let light in.  I have had condensation problems with my MR-16 lights that have clear domes however.  Does the sun have something to do with it? Heat buildup and a cold outside container?  I'm not sure.

Only one way to find out.  Stick in the yard and see what happens.

Thats why I bought the 90 degree adapters because I didnt want them coming out of the bottom. I will be putting the foam inserts in the ends of the connectors. I think they will be fine (even though some may want the typical containers) ;D.. Im gonna enjoy the led light strips ima put in each. I'm now looking on the net for a container for my mega tree le's so I can put upto 4 le's in it.. I will post it as soon as I find it.. 8)

Doesn't look like you left any room for an EX/RX module, but that may not be important for you.  Might be able to fit it if the board were mounted a little lower in the case.

I realized that on this board. The bigger box I'm getting for my mega tree will be able to hold upto 4 le's and the wireless. good catch..  :-[

Talk about DIY , GREAT JOB and look at the fun yall had PRICLESS, you also could use rubber grommets for the cords . I posted in here some where that shows them if you want to take a look but yours look good to me. THANKS FOR SHAREING <res.

[/quote]with the gromets, I would have to come out of the bottom, I would rather come out the back and point it down, or does the gromet fit into the 3/4 pipe end?

Man that is really cool looking.  I like the style very much.  If nothing else, everyone should have one Express in a case like that for the one they show off to people.  Makes it look even more high tech.

Thank you for sharing your idea with us.

What type of drill bit did you use? I was going to use a 12X12X6 pvc junction box and make a clear front  but your boxes are cheaper 3 to 1 cheaper

I used a 1 1/8 hole saw bit. I place the lid on a 6x6 block and held it firmly and drilled in high speed with a slow approach. It was not a problem.. 8)

I bought a cheap step drill bit for prepping cases and they work very well for drilling plastic.  I'm sure they would work great for metal but you would want a good quality bit.  The less expensive one at the link below will work great for these types of holes.

I'm now in the middle constructing a box for 3 le's.. DIY is what its all about. And the beauty of it is, all transparent. I'll post it upon completion..stay tuned

here is a pic of my 4 gang le case. I havent totally finished it yet but its coming along nicely. I put  the rope light in the bottom just to see what it will look like all lit up. I have some colored transparent wrapping paper i might put on the acrylic to highlight it some..Not sure yet. I still have to put all the cables to it and give it the final once over but its ok for now.. Im gonna place it under my mega tree to hopefully highlight the box and le's..  ;D

It actually is only 24x24. by the time I put the lighted bow on top and the colored paper on it, it'll look way better..(I hope)

Just wondering if you thought about mounting the two bottom LE's upside down.

It might make wiring easier and neater to the light strings

Cheers

If you mount them upside down, won't they work backwards?
