Demo Day 1
Family room (approx 500 sq foot) ........ In the beginning there was wood and more wood ............
-
and then the fun began
-
AND WHEN IS THE EXPRESS BETA BEING DONE DURING ALL THS UNIMPORTANT STUFF! >:(
LOL

Hi Larry,
Wow you have been having FUN.
I still say there is plenty of room to run wire to have blinky flashy in there LOL
Thanks for sharing
Rick R.

My wife said yes to flashy,,,,,,,,,,, but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to blinky :)

Demo Day 3 (day two was taken up by family and resting up for day 3)...
All of the skin is off of the room. Wiring is a disaster. Plumbing (for upstairs bathroom) is a mess, Air Conditioning will be a major headache, fireplace....... still not sure what to do, but thinking strongly about taking the sledgehammer to the mantle, carpet still be removed (tomorrow's job)
-
Larry,
I'm impressed. ...At the durability of that ceiling fan still hanging in there. ;D
Looks like the second best phase of remodeling is nearly over and then the long haul to the best day which is the finish or is it when the last payment is made. Unsure on that last one having not experienced it yet.
-
Larry,
What is the goal? Are you doing the work yourself? and doesn't this get in the way of blinky flashy time? Or was most everything done last year?
Leon
-
Leon, in the true spirit of DIY, I'm doing it all, with help from wife, son and neighbor (and the garbage man). Thankfully my plans on blinky flashy this year were minimal at best with the "plan" to acquire the knowledge and the basic materials (i missed all the post-season load-the-car super sales)
Greg: Demo (and most of the cleanup) should be done by Wed (although it is possible that it could pop up again downstream). My anticipation is to get a load of wood on Sat to begin the reconstruction (again... DIY... pick out the lumber stick by stick, load it into the truck, unload it into the back yard under cover)...
-
Greetings,,,,
I hope you remember to embed the controller space with hiding door, and the behind the wall spaces for the easy to string lights through rabbit tunnels...
...and the embedded sensors...
...and the secret moose cave entrance....
Keith
-
ohhhhh Keith... you are the sly one... Moose Cave...... hmmmm break through concrete blocks under the stairs ..... dig big hole in crawl space...... (may need a couple small sticks of boom-boom to break the giant rocks under there- wonder if the neighbors would notice) ..
Larry
-
Greetings,,,
Larry, you need to roll all your hobbies together, like I'm doing. Start a test sequence to show the neighbors, with the 1812 Overature. And if one or two of those loud explosions sounds a little close, that's just good showmanship!

Hey Larry,
1st off, let me say WOW! Thats a heck of a project to start and complete DIY. Dumb question, do you do construction by trade? Thats a lot to take on. Sounds like from your description of how the demo went, you'll need several permits. Plumbing, Elelctrical, HVAC, and possibly structural. Although, to be honest, I'm not sure where you live. Here's hoping your project is a success!!!
Leon
-
Background: Aero Engineer (only construction experience has been OJT doing home fixups)
Permits...... Not yet, plumbing is the one that might eat my lunch (before removing ths skin, could not tell what was hiding)... electrical will be replacing exisiting ratsnest with hopefully an ordered sense of new wire (dang that copper price jump) and replacing plugs & switches, structural... so far no intent to replace existing major structure... (one short wall being upgraded from 2x4 studs to 2x6)... HVAC... ( simple rerouting of duct should not be a killer.. but will have to see). I've intentionally not checked out the local permit process up to now.
One step at a time. Just for a sense of this weekends effort... this pile is just drywall and woodpaneling removed from the room. Carpet and potentially reusable timber are in different piles: (p.s. that is my son behind the pile..)
-
The fun continues: Todays exercise. Removing old brick is such a joy. It crumbles when struck. (The fireplace will remain... just getting rid of the ledge above and the 6 foot of brick backing. Concrete block has to remain as it is holding up the floor joists and a fireplace on the other side of the wall.)...
Larry
-
Progress:
WIndows replaced with new thermo efficient windows:
Joists have been scissered, the floor above almost level and the old plumbing ripped out.
Sewer lines are now in.
Next is to get the water lines installed for the bathroom above the family room. Then onto removing the rest of that ugly brick wall and then real construction on framing up the walls.
One major decision yet to be made..... do I rip out the old shower in the downstairs bathroom and install a new one that is double the size?
And the fun continues.
Larry
P.S. The beam you see perpendicular under the joists (and currently being held up with jackposts) will become a permenent part of the new wall that will contain the "new" improved fireplace facing. (at least in my imagination)..
-
Keith... I'm saving space under the stairs for a small "hidden" storage that should be just the right size to house computer, fm transmitter, and a small pile of blinky flashy.
If/when RJ gets his wireless blinky going,, I'll be in business.

Very Nice Moose

^^^Rip it out Larry!
Double your fun

Greetings,
STAIRS: Stepped Technology And Input Resequencing System.
Just the thing to install lights on the risers and foot controls on the steps. Makes sequencing those hard to get correct beats easier. And gives the whole family a workout...

I LOVE IT!!... may I quote you when explaining to SWMBO why we have blinky in the stairs?
Larry
-
Greetings,
Remember, when you quote, to highlight the sense of family togetherness.
Remember, to tell her how the steps are a lit stairway to heaven.
Remember, to tell her how the background lighting goes so well with the stars in her eyes.
Remember, to leave room for a cot under the stairs...
Keith

Dang... Keith,, you are good......
Now to figure out exactly where to put those 5mm leds...... hmmmm ... under the railing, in the risers (with names spelled out for all to see) , buried in the drywall going up the stairs...
so many possibilities..... so many options....
-
-
-
so many ways to be in the doghouse (again).

(ok....I return you back to your normal channel)

It has been a while since I added any info to this old posting. As you can see in the pic below, there has been some progress. Definitely not as much as I would have liked to have done.... but sometimes life just gets in the way.
Current to do list ........ too many to list here..... (still takes up 2 full pages of one liners) .. but form is definitely taking shape. Behind that wall will be a rebuilt bathroom.... with overkill on the walls (this is the "safe room" for the house). That tangle of wires hanging out of the wall is the main control panel.... 8 switches in one location providing on/off and dimming. Had to back off on adding blinky to the room...... SWAMBO has been watching too closely...
Hopefully this next weekend will see real progress....

Nice Work Larry
I do miss doing home construction
(my back doesn't :))
Cheers

Greetings,,,
Make sure to leave room to pull that fancy truck inside. You'll be more comfortable sleeping in it under the roof when you explain why it's taking so long...
;D

Easier to grab the bulldozer and have a real demo day than to "gently" make the door go from 72" wide to 80" (allowing .60" clearance on each side -- definitely not a parking job after a small libation). (but still - an interesting thought!) :)
Larry

Getting there Larry!
Yeah, I miss doing my demo/remodel projects too Rick.
Keep on truckin' :-)
John

Get er done ....... one day at a time..
-
Short update:
Mudding/taping/sanding almost done. It has been so humid the last few days that the drying is taking longer than planned. Should be done with this stage on Monday. But lookin' dang good already. Amazing how fast something happens when you turn over something to those who know what the heck they are doing.
Still putting in plugs / switches but stairs will be my next biggy... I do still have the risers from the what was there before so that should make it it much easier to do it right the first time. Only a couple of the treads survived the disassembly process. Will be replacing all with new oak treads. End result should be much much better.
I just may eventually get this done.
-
Lookin' good Larry...
so there may still be time for blinky flashy?
John

Looking good Moose
Bill

Greetings,,,
Coming right along. Have you chosen which shades of red and green to use on the walls? ;)
Keith
-
Little bit of success to report.. Putting color onto the walls today.
Sorry Keith... I was over-ruled on the red/green wall......
Finally tested the switchery....
Blew out the dimmer on this circuit (had the wrong 12/3 wire connected .... but at least the on/off now works...
I still have one circuit with a short that I still have to trace down.
Larry
-
Another step towards the end.... paint is up... just some touchups needed.. flooring almost all in... ran out of daylight and energy before getting the last pieces in the one room.. but almost there...
-
It's looking great!

Doesn't look like a dungeon anymore Moose...
Well done!

Time for one last update on this mini-project...
A few pics before the almost bare family room is taken over by a wedding party and then we move back in to enjoy the fruits of our labors...
A couple more small things to do here (fireplace mantel, mount the tv, install some transition molding) and one major (lay tile in the bathroom)
But. the room is almost ready to be all that it can be. Most of the tools of destruction and torture have been put away (it will take me a year to find everything again) .. and the wedding of our middle daughter is in the muddy back yard tomorrow ... We'll be using a ton of christmas lights to hopefully turn the back yard into a dreamworld........ (if the rain ever stops) .

Larry
(and very soon I'll be able to get back to doing what I want to do ........ lightsssssssssssssssssssssssssssss .... )

Greetings,,,
Welcome to the other side of the mountain. Looks like you made the wedding on time....

Wow Larry,
Very nice Mr. Moose!
Though its been a long time coming, looks like your very substantial efforts have been worth it.

Way to go Larry!
Looks like a really nice space... plenty of room to work on blinky now.
John

Nice!
RJ

Wow, Larry that looks great but I think it's missing something.
Can't quite put my finger on it but possibly some wood paneling and maybe some brick around the fireplace.
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

WOW!! Nice job! I hope my wife doesn't see those pics and say "Hey, I want that!"
Now, about those blinky/flashy lights................................................................
