Personally, I'm more traditional Christmas. I like all kinds of trees and decorating the things that are already there. I get the Christmas themed blow ups and blow molds but do not have any. The arches are growing on me.
This is the first time I've heard of a marty fan.

Personally all of the items can be good but it is more in the sequencing and use of the canvas (yard) for me.  I use a lot of trees minis, med, mega and spiral but I also use existing structures like trees and playground to add to them.  My kids' playgroung has an elevated deck and a firepole so the pole becomes a mega tree, the deck an elf workshop, their slide a water fall down to an ice pond and skating snowman.  My roofline will look like a gingerbread house with C9 gumdrops.  The other elements just add more icing.  I don't use any blow moilds or other things.  Although this year I am gonna add a projector for snowflakes on the house too.

Again, I think the sequencing is what makes the wow factor.

It was different things for different people up till last year. People would comment on the mini trees or the arches, ect. Last year the only comments where about the Mega tree I made using 16 SmartStrings to beta test them. And that was with very little time to put into seqencing.

I agree different strokes for different folks.  The items I have gotten to most comments on were the arches and trees.  It seems as though the younger fans like the animated light sets where the elder audience likes the figures and theme locations.

I think arches are fun factor and Mega tree is wow factor. It is hard to not watch arches during a show no matter what is going on.
My personal favorite is well sequenced mini trees (minimum 12)

The minis are a great show providing there is enough of them. But the majesty of a mega tree looming in the wind gives a sense of aw to the whole equation.
Its the most wonderful time of the year.

As far as my display, The talking heads were the most complimented. The 10x5 American was next.

The most commented song hands down, " Who spiked the Eggnog "
