Hi all; some of you may have followed a thread about a tool i am building for building RGB sequences over in the LSP forum. Last week that thread was removed. It was believed that the thread would be better on a DIY forums since the tool applies to multiple platforms.
I created the thread under the Vixen software group. There was not a place that was generic to all software programs. I am planning on fully supporting LSP/LOR and Vixen.
So if you want to follow the thread, go to http://diylightanimation.com/index.php?topic=7657.0
sorry for any confusion of moving the threads around
The tool is at http://meighan.net/rgbsb
thanks

New thread started in Vixen on rgbsb: http://diylightanimation.com/index.php?topic=8072.msg115352#msg115352
The other thread was getting too unwieldy.
Here are some of the new models that are done
(http://meighan.net/rgbsb/models/spirals/r_s3_t1_3232_cw.gif)
I am working now on the Vixen export, LSP 2.0 will be right after that
thanks

WOW!!! Incredible!!! Can't wait until the LSP export is done!
-
Sean - This looks like one of those tools that will change how we sequence the new RGB lights. Saving many hours of individual node sequencing. Thank You for the effort you are putting into this project!! The new builder looks awesome!!

All of this because i am lazy ..
December. I think i might want to get into christmas lights for next year. I look at megatrees and try the downloads of the sequencers (I have installed all three LSP,LOR and Vixen 2.1). I think it will be too hard to sequence the RGB devices and decide to build a tool for myself.
I still own no equipment. I will get an ether dongle, Lynx express sometime this summer. I will follow up with smart strings and finally be able to build my tree.
In the meantime, the tool seems to be developing into madrix-lite.
On the doityourselgchristmas forum, someone asked if i could create a barber pole.
http://doityourselfchristmas.com/forums/showthread.php?19205-RGB-Sequence-Builder-for-Megatrees-Planes-or-any-other-arbitrary-object
i modified the models to handle any width spiral and also to make half of a megatree targets.
Here is Joels barber pole

(Jaw Dropped) Just amazing what talent you have Sean. Thank you.
-
I think I'll just return my LSP. :)
You are going to be a marked man when the folks from Madrix, LSP and LOR see what you've done.
You must find a way to grandfather a few of your favorite buddies into this so that when you sell the code to one of those developers we can continue to have free upgrades for life. (wishful thinking on my part... :) )
-
Hi Steve;
:)
you have been one of the consistent supporters of my tool all along, i appreciate it.
I have no plans on selling what i develop. I am hoping to document how to build models so other people could join in.
It has been asked to enhance rgbsb to also do arches besides megatrees. i have put that on my to do list.
I am thinking of reading icon files and putting them on the tree. Since most of our trees are like 16-32 strands and maybe 30-80 pixels high we dont have very dense pixel areas.
Does anyone have a website with some good Christmas icons? also to be put on the to-do list.
Please send video clips and the time of effects you would like to see added.
Some effects are easy some are harder to program. All that i have seen i think i can do.
thanks
sean

Looks awesome!
Keep up the good work Sean. I don't plan on adding an RGB Tree this year but I am amazed with what you have already came up with!
Grant

With your development I might end up getting into rgb next year.
-
Where do I buy in? Awesome job....amazing! Forcing me to totally rethink my display, and of course spend more on RGB for this year.

One thing i am thinking of doing is only making half of a megatree. This will cut the cost in half and yet will still display all of the effects i am making.
if you see any effects you would like me to support please send the video link and the timestamp of where the effect is in the video.
i will add them into my inbox. I finished 3 new models today.
thanks

Another group of lighting elements to consider... halloween.
I don't know how you could apply grids to the current offering of monster faces created by light strings, but maybe there is someone creative who can help make that leap.
grids could be use (obviously) for animation. Not only for scrolling text, but maybe dancing skeletons and other 'moving' sprites. I've seen dancing figures before, but if you combine the wide color range of RGB with the animations you could have a green frankenstein head, that is lifted with a spurt of blood to show a white skull beneath. :) Sorry to be halloween-gross :) but I'm just thinking of the power of animation with full color pixels.

Two new models added to library
Vertical bars and falling stars

<res.
I'm glad you live close so that when you do get the equipment, I can see it in person!
Great job!
Steve

Nice job on this.
-
Falling stars need to then fall away...
-
I have finished the scrolling text. I have added it into the library of effects

Now on to the xml work
thanks

Sean,
Nice work can't wait to try these out with LSP2, Thanks for your continued hard work. :)
-
I just ran across this thread. I can't wait. Did you say that you could use any lighting layout with your software? I can't wait to see it and give it a try. What kind of icons are you wanting to use - that you don't have. Maybe I can help develop something.

When I decide to get into the RGB stuff, I'm also thinking of doing a half megatree sort of like this:

While I appreciate the amount of work and endless talent required to what you've accomplished so far, repeating patterns can get to be... well... repetitive. What would be super cool would be to have a palette of patterns to choose from (sort of like the variety of slide transitions and object animations in PowerPoint) and alllow us to smoothly and gracefuly blend/transition them all with the beat or directly to the notes of music.
Hmmmm... it sounds like I'm asking for a freebie version of Superstar lights that doesn't require LOR's software. <yk..
-
Well gary, that would be cool!
I have a lot of work in front of me before i start thinking about where i take the tool next. I am approaching 150 hours of programming so far. By the time i get all flavors of sequencers xml files working and everything integrated, i expect i will pass 1000 hours by this summer.
Although they look repetitive, they do take work to get them to be generic and to , well work.
Sometimes my imagination starts thinking "If i brought in the mp3 file and then find the beat, i could then transition between effects and .." Whoa, i say. I have crossed over into becoming a sequencer instead of a sequence builder.
I am thinking this summer i might go half way there. Get a list of time stamps and identify them with something that says transitions should occur here. Feed that list fo time events to rgbsb and then lay in multiple effects synced to those points. I still would be web based and would still produce an xml file. It is just the sequences i make would be getting bigger.
thanks for the ideas
who knows, wait until summer. Or wait until i get my first hardware device. I did order a solder iron.

I have added an option to have two lines of text. This is what i am thinking my future tree might use between songs
(http://meighan.net/rgbsb/models/text/text_dual_t1_3232_50ms.gif)
-
Well, just as i was getting ready to go to bed, i got an idea about how to project pictures onto the tree.
I took the image i use for my avatar (99x139 pixels in a png file) and wrote a new model, picture projection onto the tree.
This means i will be able to also project movies. The problem is getting the resolution small enough. In this case i divided each axis by 5 and just took the rgb value. Better would be to average them, to enhance them, .etc.
But for a first pass, not bad

-
But for a first past, not bad
Are you kidding? It's great! I just wanted to say thank you for all the work you're doing. You're an inspiration.

Sean this is amazing! I can not get over the knowledge and creativity you have come up with in a very short time.
-
thanks!
On the LOR forum, someone asked if i could do his avatar, it worked better than mine. I think fewer colors and simpler design probably convert.
Here was his
(http://meighan.net/rgbsb/images/14578.jpg)
which became
(http://meighan.net/rgbsb/models/pictures/14578_100ms.gif)
so, if you want to post an image ( isuggest something less than 200x200), ill convert them and add them on to the web page.
The tool accepts jpg,png and gif
it auto sizes and projects on to the tree.
thanks
-
I have a feeling this may not convert well, but worth a try...

well , here it is

Thank you so much! Now, if only I could afford the smart strings required to do this!
I agree with Steve Gase (from the other thread), you need to come up with a cool name for this tool!
Steve
-
I agree, my name sucks.
I have signed up for the Academy, I may speak about rgbsb (or whatever) we call it by then. I expect i should have all three sequencers working. I hope movies are done. I expect i will get the physics effects (snowstorms, fireworks, waves) finished.
I have an idea of how to sequence multiple effects one to the next. This sort of gets this to be more like a sequencer.
I'll let you in on a secret, it has always been my plan, for myself, to pass in a timeline with beats and create most of the rgb sequencing and then bring back the whole thing and use Vixen or LSP to sequence the rest of the front yard for the non rgb stuff.
In other words, i haven't envisioned this as one effect, one import. Another effect, another import. This vision is probably going to be done by end of summer or fall.
But who knows, sometimes things go faster than i expected.
I am open to any name.
So what would be a good name to replace rgbsb (A clunky name, i admit)? Programmers are not marketing
As far as moving to my own group, that would be easier. Here is what i originally tried
1) i started working with vixen first so i start a thread.
2) Since tool is generic i post a link in the LSP group pointing over there. I say "My tool is generic"
Result, i get very little input from LSP folks.
Now this last week, i decide i will post in BOTH LSP and Vixen. The result? There are more views from LSP folks.
Being that my tool spans all the sequencers , i currently am posting the same message in 6 threads
Since i started the tool , there have been approx 3700 views on the threads.
Half of these view hits have occurred since releasing the new effects (I started Feb 21?, seems longer ago than that). Over the last 3 days, these are views per thread
PlanetChristmas: 129
DLA LSP Group: 371
DLA Vixen Group: 335
DoitYourselfChristmas: 634
LOR: 467
AusChristmas: 167
Here are the 6 threads i post to

If we could get our own group here on DLA i could get down to 5 threads from 6.
thanks

How about TripleS (Smart String Sequencer)
Steve
-
Well, since it would have some meaning to your family... Nutcracker.
Christmas-y name. Kinda fits in with Vixen, Grinch, etc.
-
In that case what about RGBCracker.
-
Your work is truly amazing. I look forward to talking to you about your program at the academy in a few months.
Excellent and inspirational. It will make RGB that much more amazing this christmas season
I look forward to buying you a beer in Texas

Being a LOR user I was excited by the Super Star when it came out until I figured out the cost. <fp. The program is an added expense plus the LOR pixels are about $250 a pop. (x-12=$3000) Pixel net is a much better option but I was at a loss about sequencing. On, off, Fade, twinkle are one thing but I have a mental block about color changes. I will be moving forward with my flat ( or slightly curved tree). Thank you for your hard work and its probably best you started with what you know and not gotten tangled in the sequencing mess. It can be daunting and has overwhelmed me more then once, being on the outside and not having the "that can't be done" thing going on is a big help.
-

I like the simple name "Nutcracker" because, after all, easy RGB sequencing with attractive end results is a tough nut to crack.
-
I like Nutcracker as well because it's personal to you and your story. This is like one of your kids you're creating, so the name should be just as reflective!!

Creating kids? Whoah, whoah, whoah! We want this board to remain PG-13! ;D
