the controller works fine when running a show just wondering if anyone had seen this before

I have 2 le's that do it. Its ok as long as everything is working.

I have one with the same issue but everything seems to be working fine. Could it be that the LED is in backwards with the positive lead in the negative hole?

The led is most likely fine. Some of the 485 chips do this and others don't.
If it annoys you, try swapping the two 485 chips.

I know we say its the 485 chips, so i have 3 extras and replaced them and no difference. The data link stayed on. So maybe all my chips came from the bad batch? Orr its something else....

If the controller is working, is it really a big deal.  If the LED was in backwards, it would not light at all.

To some of us, it is a big deal.  It would drive me nuts.  But I guess it's just my personality.  As for you guys, I just want to know what it is that's keeping it on.

I'm wondering on how the firmware was loaded.

loaded via pickit 3
built 11 more loaded software same way this is the only one that does this
i'm just currious what is causing it to stay on

Did you try swapping the 485's with one of the LE's that doesn't do it?

Some 485 chips do that, work fine but the LED stays on. Reported this 2 years ago and no answer is to why.

Just swap the 485 chips with a know good one and place the one that keeps the LED on with the Out2 485 chip, that one does not have an LED indicator.

I have had it where I would not get a signal.  Swap the 485 chips and they both work.  I think its the socket more than anything because out of all the LE's I have built, and its been a lot, I don't think I have ever had a bad 485 chip.

Just because it is lighting the DMX LED without a signal doesn't make it bad.  I haven't bothered to look at the chips specs to see if there have been some assumptions made as to what needs to be done to have this LED work because if I'm betting the signal I really don't care.  Once it's buttoned up in its case, I'm not going to see it anyway and it it stops working, the DMX tester will show me what the problem is.

Just because the led is on does not mean the chip is bad.

When there is nothing connected, the input lines float. That could give you a 0 or a 1 on the data out pin...

When it is connected and data is flowing, you should be able to see a slight flickering - not just on or off.
