Title: Pic Programming
Post by: deplanche on January 28, 2011,
Will the PicKit 2 be able to be used to program the PICs for the SSC's?  I thought I read something about that somewhat (can't remember if it is a yes or no), but I can't seem to find that.

Can Pic kit 3 also be used for programming? Can someone explain the difference in the two? Thanks,George

Yes the PicKIT 3 can program all of RJ's creations.

Main difference is the PicKit 3 is the "newer" version and supposedly more "future proof" for future chips, while the PicKit 2 is the last model but very proven over time.

Both have an easy utility to make programming easy, but the PicKIT 3's version is still in beta and not foolproof at this point.

I have the PicKIT 3 and have not had any problems programming anything.

Hope that helps.

I think you'll find a lot of people on this forum, including myself, have purchased from j1sys.  I was happy with my order and it was shipped quickly. I went with the PICKIT 3 figuring I might as well have the latest technology.  If you wanted to save a little money, it sounds like you could get away with the PICKIT 2 for programming DLA projects (also available from j1sys).

+1 for J1sys.  Get the one with the boards if you want the complete ability.  The dongles dont have the ICSP pins so you need the boards to program those.

We use the 18 and 28 pin PIC's, the picture you posted showed a 14 pin adapter. Going to need more adapters

or buy the 2 needed separately.

Agree with what he said above about needing the other parts, but also looking at your picture that is a clone so I am not really sure about how to program (what software it uses) compared to the MicroChip PicKIT 2 and 3, so you might have to learn that part on your own.

Should work fine as long as the software is easy   ;D

Ed from J1sys is a wizard.  I buy from him just for the technical support he provides.

I can't speak highly enough of the quality of product from j1sys mentioned by others here.

When I was buying new I had the option of pickit 2 and pickit 3.  If I was recommending this to others I would recommend the pickit 3.  A lot of the earlier issues that made pickit 2 a better option than pickit 3 are no longer factors in decision making.  The larger factor is future life of the product.  pickit 2 will slowly become less useful as newer chips are released, which will not be supported on the pickit 2.

For the price I would buy the bundle with all four adapters if your budget permits it.  Many products from RJ now offer the ability to hookup the programmer directly to the PCB; however, if you're building lots of boards and devices you may find it easier to just use an adapter and plug in each micro-controller prior to inserting them into the assembled boards.  With the breakout boards in these kits it provides another option to troubleshoot with.  On my first express we had one bad solder joint on the ICSP header, which prevented the chip from being programmed correctly.  It partially worked; however, it provided the wrong checksums back to the application.  We troubleshooted it quickly by putting the chip into the adaptor and confirmed it was not an issue with the chip or the firmware file.  We then tested and re-soldered on header pin on the express board.

I wish I had waited before buying my PICKit3; however all is good. I bought the adapters, so that I woundn't have to breadboard. So in all I paid a little more this way, but it is a great solution.

YEAH!!!!   :D

Thanks for the link,

I got my pic kit 3 a month ago but haven't even thought about opening it. Is there any reason I need to check it to make sure something works?
I was just kind of waiting until I had something I needed to do with it!

one of my adapters had a faulty lever which they replaced once I notified them of the issue.  So it might be a good idea just to check things out for broken or missing items!

Thanks for the heads up.  I just went through the adapters in my recent order.  Fortunately everything appears to be solid.
