Brain Test
« on: October 17, 2011, »
Hi Folks,

Count the number of times that the letter "f" appears in the following sentence.

Finished files are the result of years of scientific study combined with the experience of years.

I'll going to lock this post for a while and then open it up later so everyone can put their guesses in. That way everyone has a chance to come up with their own number.

Cheers

I'm guessing one, but could also see 5 or 6 depending on how you read things...

2 "f"s, one "F".

So are you looking for the one f in "the following sentence" or people missing the f in "of" due to pronouncing it as a "v"?

There are 6 "f"s in this passage. If you only counted 3, you're not alone. Most people fail to count the "f's" in the word of. Why? When looking for "f's" your brain is actually scanning for the sound of the letter "f" – which usually makes the /f/ sound, like in fox. In the word of, though, "f" makes the /v/ sound. As a result, the brain overlooks the word of as it scans for the sound of /f/.

Cheers
