Is the courtesy help PIC PROGRAMMING list still up to date?

in February we had discussions about the associated map and that spurred some updates. There have been no changes since then.
As you might have been suggesting with your posting, this can be a call to arms to update the list. If you want to add (or remove!) your name, let me know an I can help you with the Wiki changes. (you can also make changes on your own if you prefer!)

The issue was also brought up that in order to really work with this hobby, you really need a PIC programmer which is also one of the reason that many PIC no longer come programed in the coops. Also, many of the new surface mount chips cannot be programmed until the device is built such as the EtherDongle making it all the more difficult having someone else program it. The Pickit-3 is not all that expensive and is a worthwhile investment for this hobby and if you decide to get out, you could probably sell it for close to what you paid for it.

hmmm... the passive hubs don't have a pic, and need no programming.
the ssc v2 don't YET have test firmware, so you won't need to bounce back to test and production. i don't know if they come programmed -- i just program mine out of habit as I assemble them.
still, an EtherDongle might need programming. And dealing with a SSC configuration failure sometimes needs a reprogram.
As already recommended, I suggest getting one. You don't need the extra modules for the chips. Each of the kits you'll be working with has a header and you can program the board/pic directly.
after you are set up, you can easily sell the pickit in the forum for maybe 80% (just guessing) what you paid for it... minus shipping.

And is it difficult to program?
If the conductor and a etherdonglecomes out. I am putting them together.

just do a ebay search - you will find many selling them - just make sure its a legit from microchip and not a clone....

I agree with Rick, bought both of mine direct from Microchip.

The pickit-2 is faster and easier to use but they are no longer updating it so the Pickit-3 is required for the newer PIC's that are using on the EtherDongle. The prgrammer is really a required tool for thes hobby and although you may be able to get by without it for a while, the time WILL come when you will need to flash or reflash a PIC and if it's during your show, then you will probably be S O L if you don't have the needed programmer.

Ya if you have to reflash that would be the pits not having a PIC programmer.
All the work and no show. That would be the pits.
Is that all I need the PIC programmer. Any extras.

With my luck I'll bite the bullet, buy the Pickit-3 and they'll come out with the Pickit-4 and stop updating my 3. <fp.

Pretty much. All of the newer devices hava an ICS header and all you need is the pogrammer to flash or reflash them. The USB dongle, SSR4 with DMX, Freestyle, and the MR16 don't and would need a seperate socket to plug the PIC in for progamming,

Some kits do not have the header... but for you, the etherdongle and SSC-related kits DO have the header. So, no adapters are needed.
One exception of interest... the USB Dongle needs a adapter.
Look at the chart referenced below. It will tell you if a adapter is needed, and which one.

Steve has already posted the chart for which one but IF you need them I would get the 28 pin adapter and maybe the 20 pin adapter if you have those Lynx kits.
