Title: Ok the first sequence is kinda boring out in the yard
Post by: arw01 on December 02, 2013,
I have the first song as Elvis's Blue Christmas, so I mainly work in blues, deep on the house and some lighter blue in the arches.

I've watched a fair number of videos and don't have the symmetrical display out there to work a back and forth back and forth, around around sort of cycle to keep the eyes going.  And unfortunately a few of my "elements" are a bit short, like my box bushes on the far right of the yard and the candy canes around that big tree on the right.

I've done some blink back and forth on the icicle lights, whole house and whole garage. Those circles in the front are large static bulbs and there are three sets there so I can blink blink blink them in a chase or pattern of two outside on and inside off etc.

Some hints from the veterans to make the show more lively por for vor?

The statis display as rendered in lsp:

The RGB elements

One thing I need to figure out is some more interesting things to do with the arches.

I think you've done a great job for first year but I don't think there really is much you can do to make Blue Christmas much of a show stopper.  That said, I think you could do some house outline chases to the "one and two and" beat.  On simpler material I tend to over compensate by using more complex color combos/chases.  If I had to sequence this for you I would be doing mostly blue white 3-5 node chases/alternating on the house outline.  I just don't see arches working here.  I would then use other elements for a verse or chorus and maybe light up some of your large elements during that time.  Best of luck.

It has definetly been a bit challenging with that song.  I had really hoped for that plasma effect off the blue palet, but that will be a next year fixed bug.  The developer gave me another macro to try instead and it will restrict down to the blue.  I was hand painting some small pixel chases on the arches sort of slow over the bright blue background as just an eye catcher to watch through some of more la la la parts of the track.

I'll keep plugging, ithink I saw the ability in 2.8 to make a video of the sequence, will have to try that.

You could animate the arches to the back up singers, the "ew---ew-ew--ew" part.  Maybe starting with the arch on the left with the first "ew" change it to white then have it fade back to blue.  Repeat with the other 3 "ews" and arches.  Once you get the first one perfected, you should be able to copy and paste.  Pretty simple if you're using hybrid mode in your SSCs.

I'm trying to think what else I would do... You could make Elmo flash to the words like he's "singing" - again basic, but may work.  What are the 12 round things at the bottom of the picture?  The lines, "Decorations of RED on a GREEN Christmas tree" "You'll be doing alright with your Christmas of WHITE"  have some possibilities to use RGB to accent the lyrics.

Honestly, I've never tried doing a song this slow.  Synchronized ramp-ups/fade downs of the different elements.

I did the video export and it works well!  No music though so you will need to sync music with a movie program.

I bet a singing element/s would work really well with Blue Christmas.  I see Holiday Coro has more than I remember last time.

If it were me, I would start another song that is more livelier than continue with Blue Christmas.  I find inspiration many times when working on a new song time and later I will go and embellish some of my weaker stuff.

I would agree with this.  Sometimes you need a break from one song to get inspiration.

I'm not sure what sequencer you're using (I'm sure they all have a form of this) but in Vixen 2.1.1 there is an "Invert" effect.  This may be good for your non RGB stuff.  For instance if you Invert a chase on a fast song, you may not see it as clearly as you would on a slower song.

Good hints in there.  I had pretty decided to put Blue Christmas into the rotation with some "test sequences" in an xlights schedule or maybe I will play with LSP  and make some weird transitions on the whole rgb layer or something like that to get a show running.
Why wife does not like coming home to no christmas lights going until I get home with the laptop and can run a test sequence for hours on end.  Twinkle is a nice one though.

I almost have space oddyssey from working a few weeks back, and then off to the fox song with the beats and such from Pete's kind sharing.  Then hope to add one song a week until Christmas and have a portfolio to work on next year.

I like the idea of the red lights on the green christmas tree, and was thinking I will take my last 50 pixels and put them on the tree too so I have 200 on there.  Maybe with the ztree in LSP I can wrap them properly and get a little bit of a mega tree affect in there with some spirals and meteors.  It's 7' tall or so and 3' across at the bottom, might be a bit dramatic flowing blue like the house edges.

Thank you gentleman.
