Title: Dec 31 or Jan 1 - when is the last show?
Post by: drlucas on December 31, 2013,
My wife says tomorrow night is acceptable for lights to be on. I thought it was today. What is the consensus for the end of the show?

I run mine until 12.30 tonight and then it goes dark until next year. I do run individual songs that I'm working on for the following year just to see how they look but that's just while I'm outside working on them.

all of my flood lights and most of my coroflakes stayed on after the show Sunday night... I power-cycled everything and they continued to stay on after power was restored.

It was uncommonly cold.

Rather than try to figure out the problem I decided Sunday was the end of my show this year. :)

Today was very nice and half of the stuff is now down.  Tomorrow the rest will be down...  and I will begin my testing and repair cycle.

The 26th was the last night for me  Took everything down when it was 50 out, very odd for us this time of year.  I'd rather be warm taking things down then freezing my butt off.

-15 here without the windchill.  Waiting for it to at least hit a positive number before tear-down, but tonight is the last show.

I will tear it down this weekend so the lights will stay on thru Friday but will shut down fairly early on Friday night.  The wife likes to see them when she goes to work in the morning and when she gets home so she gets to see them for 2 more mornings and nights.

Usually run to the night of the Epiphany (when the Magi arrived on Jan 6) but this year I will keep everything going until the 10th so my daughter, who's been in Florida for the last 8 months, will have a chance to see it when she visits. Then if we're not under 10 ft of snow teardown begins on Sunday the 12th.
Happy New Years all.

+1 on the Epiphany. My eldest son (15) was born on Epiphany day, so I will usually run till whatever weekend follows.

I will run the last schedule tonight.  However, I usually leave it up for a couple more weeks and run it on-demand for people who couldn't make it by and for testing/filming purposes.

My last show was last night December 31st and started tear down right after since I had to put it up in the rain might as well take it down in the snow as we are under a winter weather advisory.

We are going to have a windchill of -24 here tonight....but on the weekend will get back up to 30 or so.....The verdict: I am going to change my schedule to run tonight only and then continue the tear down this weekend (I started with the LEs and other items on the ground that got impacted by the freezing rain a couple of weeks ago, but have kept all the other RGB items up) .Hope I can get the spikes and other things out of the ground with the frost, will see how that goes. I had to put in a bit of rebar for my arches....and those candy canes use plastic spikes....if I try to pull them up they will snap for sure.

Happy New Year!

+1 but I will be taking down some static elements today or tomorrow depending on weather.  supposed to get to 50 this afternoon.

I wait till after New Years and after my entire family and close friends have had a chance to see them, then it depends on the weather.  I also like to take a night or two of videos and maybe a video walkthrough to help me remember what I did the following year.  Once I get time and the weather is acceptable, I break it down in a couple days on the earliest weekend I can.  This year with coaching club volleyball and watching my other daughters team -- its going to make take down a challenge ... so I may just take it down every free hour I have.  Having the show up gives you a great opportunity with a live show "simulator" which you don't have the rest of the year, so its best to take advantage of that a bit.  Its also a great time to document all your problems in detail so you can get those things all fixed in the off season.

I do the same thing with the exception of if New Year's Day falls on the weekend, then teardown starts New Year's Day day.

I thought I would be dark last night, but I must have told the LSP scheduler through the 1st instead of the 31st.   :o

Probably run one more cycle tonight to fix up some filming and maybe upload my latest version of them as well so I have a few less issues to fix this summer.  Then I will start packing up a few pieces a night, but plan to leave a few things up for a small valentines show as that is my wife's favorite holiday.

It will give new meaning to "red light" district.

First dark night is tonight

Tear down this weekend (unless wind helps me this evening)

Started Planning for 2014 two weeks ago
          - already have songs selected and purchased
          - new elements for the display already being resourced for building this Spring/Summer
          - family already rolling their eyes

Last night (Jan 1) was the last run of the show for me.
I kinda envy the others that are getting to take display down.  Far too cold here to do that and it has been snowing to boot!
Unless there is an amazing warm up, my stuff will probably be out for several weeks!
Already planning on some changes for next year.  RGB elements will definitely be running!

I'm really a lot like the last two posts :)

Starting the build for next year...already got in contact with a guy who can help with my coroflake build as I want to do about 8 of them at a different size than whats generally available. Also want to get a 10' snowman to go along with my nutcracker...wonder if Sean has any design ideas to do that in a similar manner (the alternative is a coro snowman, but I have some design issues to deal with on that front).... also my megatree existing is going to be a matrix making a need for another megatree...have some ideas on how I can use my existing pine tree, but need to think that through ALOT more.

As for the tear down...another night -30 degrees but tomorrow it's supposed to be 32 so my intention is to get at least 1/2 the items down. The highest part of the roof where the outline and one active hub is sitting will likely wait until spring...anyone know how long that marine box can stay out in the cold for? should I keep AC to the box all winter. I doubt operating OR storage temps for a PSU and active hub were meant for conditions in the -ves.

The funny thing is that I got my first damage last night in the heavy wind and the sad thing is that I have to go out and fix it.  My wife has someone coming to see it with their child so it needs to be up and working.  And then, LOL, Sat begins tear down.

It's back up to 20 degrees today but the wind is up around 15mph and the first roof has about 3" of ice on it. I think I can still get up there with my shovel as a support option. I'll make sure the boy is at the bottom of the ladder and pass him down the five items I can get too. I'm not going on the main roof. The other nodes up there and the active hub can wait. Falling from 10' will hurt plenty - falling from 30 will kill me.  I prefer not to fall so will ensure if there is even a slight risk on the first roof the signing tree will stay right where he is until spring. (Fortunately it's 6 quick screws for disconnect but still gotta get there).

All but the star on top of the mega tree and the nodes on the high roof are down ( well the hub on the high roof is there still). The arches and candy canes on the ground will come out in a month or four when the frost leaves. I'm not risking breaking off the stakes in the ground getting them out. Here is a picture of my lack of real consideration of storage in the garage. I'll need to do something with those 1/2" PVC pipes because I want to transform my flexstrip megatree into a matrix and will need some serious space to work.

We normally "de-Christmas" during the New Year's break, but there are quite a few people in my neighborhood (San Jose, CA) who leave at least some of their holiday lights up year-round!  I suspect some of them are just lazy, but we do have quite a few families from India, and decorating with lights seems to come quite naturally for them.  They have "Diwali" (festival of lights) every fall, but here they leave the lights up for months and some never take them down.  I love it!

I'm very much a first opportunity type of guy. The only hard and fast rule we have at our house is Christmas Tree is out of the house before Jan 2nd as that's my daughters birthday and crossing celebrations are not encouraged. Mind you my son and I share a birthday and often share a cake so apparently that rule of crossing celebrations have a few exceptions.

Toronto and as a result of urban sprawl is very multicultural however most of the families try to fit in with local traditions. I have only seen the people who are lazy leave the lights up year round. They are also the same people who tend not to shovel their sidewalks. There aughta be a law against that (says the grumpy guy who was sliding around on the icy sidewalks at 6 this morning with the dogs)

At this point, the weather and my schedule (of free time) will dictate when I can take it down.  I'm removing electronics as much as possible but removing much will depend a lot on decent weather for removing it.

Went dark yesterday, got the active hubs in, the arches, and a few SSC's.  The static is down and mostly put away except the icicle and multi-color leds on the gutters.  A whole lot of cables still need to come down, but I am leaving a bit up for a small Valentines show, then it will all come down until close to July when a few things may go back up.

-29 overnite but back to a balmy 36 on the weekend. And more and more freezing rain!!

I really want the rgb off the roof down as well as the last hub. May be able to get to the hub based on the approach last weekend I took but no way I can touch the rgb until the ice is gone.

With my 2nd roof I can slide down to the bottom of it in the middle and be stopped with the frame I built for the lights but if I went near the edge of the roof I wouldn't stand a chance.

So I'll have to be kept interested in other projects in the meantime. Like trying to figure out how to best mount the new matrix I'm building. That will be a different thread. I guess I can organize the stuff I've taken down so far as well as confirm everything still works now it's been thawed out. Is there a period of time to leave the gear at room temps before starting up after being outside in sub zero temps? Maybe a day?

Took down everything on ground level except of my mega tree Sunday (with help from my wonderful wife) before the snow (6") and the bone chilling code set in (-14 tomorrow).  Mega tree and everything on the second floor will have to wait till snow melts some and temperatures warm back up.  The sad part for me is that I didn't get a chance to video anything this year.  :(

Got all my cords and yard elements packed away yesterday and performed the ritual "mowing of the grass". It has been growing like crazy this year and I actually had to do some careful touch ups with the string trimmer since it was starting to obscure ground lights and strobes. All went well with the ritual.... no missed cords or chunks of PVC were sacrificed this year :D

Got all of mine down and placed in the garage. Waiting on a new shed. I am not putting the 20 bins back in the garage attic..... my daughter moved out and my wife can't lift the bins. I looked into a lift but the room I would loose and the cost is prohibitive.  Might be time for a new younger wife....but that might be cost prohibitive also.... 8)

Well, as mentioned previously, the Christmas season traditionally ran until Epihpany, which is 12 days.  I think everyone has heard the song?  I leave mine on until Jan 6.  I see no reason to break with tradition in this instance.  OTOH, there are a couple of houses in the neighborhood that leave their lights on more than a month.  I don't have a problem with that.

To me, the season is from Thanksgiving thru New years eve.  The wife wants the display to run on Friday and it will but I will still need to start teardown during the day.  I will just limit it to the lights in the trees which is much easier to do when it is cloudy and Friday will be the only cloudy day during the teardown period.
