Title: Dongle with my new Express
Post by: jhoybs on March 22, 2014,
Hey Guys!

I've been viewing these forums for years and jumped into the hobby recently with an Express in a coop.  My next steps were to wait for a Etherdongle coop (or in-stock PCB in the store).  Looking over the docs for programming, I find that the config utility will only work with a USB dongle.

Since both dongle PCBs are out-of-stock in the store and there hasn't been a USB coop for a while, what would you guys suggest I do?  Dongles seem pretty hard to come by for a newbie.

Thanks,
Jim

I for one never use the config program and I have used both a USB dongle and an etherdongle.  Pick your dongle based on what all you are going to be doing in the show.  I still use my USB dongle in my workshop and occasionally in my yard  with a laptop when I'm doing my setup.

Go through the "For Sale" section there is usally always someone selling one or make a post WTB (want to buy) either USB or Etherdongle.

I would suggest getting both as a USB dongle is great for testing, but if you can only afford one get the etherdongle as it is more versatile.

The USB dongle might work for me.  I don't intend to sequence to music just yet.  Mostly I want to do color/pattern changing.  Would the USB dongle be good for this use?

Either dongle will work for that purpose and as you have noticed, if you want to use the utility, it currretly only works with the USB donge.

If you are wanting only DMX, no synchronized music, and are ok with a speed of 100ms then another option is the Panther DMX Player.
