Title: Xlight / nutcracker / vixen2.1 / problem
Post by: royce on December 17, 2014,

Not sure what my problem is. Running xlight/nutcracker to a ED that has pixelnet, to an active hub that drives a mega tree. The mega tree works like it should. Out of the active hub  the dmx goes to my #1 LE and from there daisy change to 12 more LE. The problem is the dmx is giving bad data to the all of the LE. My xlight setup is vixen\sequence   In vixen sequence I have the vix file and in the profile I have the vir file. What Am I doing wrong. Thanks for any help

A vir file is a routine file that is used to import data into Vixen so I am not sure how that factors into your issue.  Make sure your active hub has the correct universe set for your DMX channels.  Remember that the hub regenerates the first 512 channels as DMX so your DMX channels have to be 512 or less.

Hope that helps,

If you have your DMX channels in the first 512 channels and your megatree also starts at channel 1 then the channels are overlapping.  The DMX out only takes the 512 pixelnet channels you designate and copies/translates them to DMX.  The channels are still sent to pixelnet.  If your LEs cover the first 100 channels you can put an effect on the first 100 channels and it will play on both DMX and pixelnet.

the hub has the dmx has the jumper on 1 universe as well as the pixelnet. My dmx starts at channel 1 to 208 and my mega tree starts at 698 to 3997.  I have 2 active hubs and the same results on the spare.

if the issue occurs on both active hubs, then the source of the problem is either the dongle, software, or start channel conflict. have you switched the cat5 cable feeding your active hub? dongle? has this problem just started or has it not worked properly at all?  sounds like something has changed in your software set up or you have a start channel conflict.
1. do you use the adjustable preview? if so, does everything work in the preview ?
2.  have you moved any channels around in vixen via channel mapper?
3. when you open a sequence, in the upper left corner where it has your channel count, go into test channels and see if you can operate the dmx channels 1-208 individually, select all should   turn them all on as well as being able to turn on each channel independently.
all you need to run a vixen sequence is have a .vix file and a .pro file. the .vir file should be in the routines folder, not in the profile.

Tell me if this is the correct way to setup. In vixen I have a vix file (dmx), and a  xlight\nutcracker xseq file (maga tree effects). Then I converted the vix file into the xseq file. When playing the song xseq file in xlight schedule my dmx channels are out of order. All of the file are in my show directory. When I tested the lights in xlights all of the channel are in the correct order. I'm thinking this is something simple, can't see the forest for all the trees. Hope I explained this so you can understand this.

this is my first year for a mega tree so I haven't got it to work yet

were you able to operate the mega tree threw xlights before you added the dmx conversion? when you say that your dmx channels are playing out of whack, is the mega tree working? sounds like you have a set up issue that is off. you might try sending Sean a pm and a copy of your rgb effects and rgb network files in xlights. he would be able to tell you right away what's wrong.

just for future thought on how to use both xlights and vixen, which is what i do. here is what i do:

first create all of my effects for my rgb in xlights/nutcracker. i then export my xlights sequence as a .vir file. open the folder for xlights and move the newly created .vir file from xlights to vixen and place the .vir file into the routines folder in vixen.  open vixen and  open your dmx sequence with your 208 channels of data, go to add-ins and choose load routine. it will ask you which routine, at this time you select the .vir file you just created, choose the channel you want to insert the effects and the time frame. make sure your data is in the right spots and save the sequence. that is what i do to add mega tree effects to an existing vixen sequence. for new sequences, i do all my stuff in xlights, then just export as a .vix file and move it to vixen. doing so makes it easier to sequence your dmx items IMO. the colors from your rgb effects helps you dictate which color to make your dmx items. hope this helps.
