Title: Left controller outside with lid off overnight
Post by: taybrynn on November 27, 2015,
I M an idiot.

I just discover it's full of snow ... Was running and everything.   Snowed overnight and -5 temps.   Couldn't tell if the board was working or not.

Unplugged everything and brought it inside to melt and dry out.

Argh !!!!

Been there done that, but in my case I only had overnight condensation and the show was not running at the time.  Still using that controller.

I did this last year, had rain on a controller (falcon hub). I disconnected it, drained water. put in over at 170 degrees to dry it out. vacuum oven would be better. After an hour, plugged it back in, still working one year later.

These stories are encouraging!    It may have been a blessing that it was so cold, as there was no liquid, just  pure ice crystals and flakes.   It's dry now, just need to give it a whirl and cross my fingers !

Remember that rain and snow are essentially distilled water.  They do pick up some contamination from atmospheric pollution, but not much.  Distilled water is not terribly harmful to most electronics equipment.  It certainly *CAN* damage some components, but at work we have had quite a few different systems go swimming in rain water, and only a very few have suffered significant permanent damage.  I had a Lynx Wireless DMX Tx/Rx dongle get flooded this year, and it was still working even when the case was full of water.  I came across the issue when troubleshooting another problem.

Sitting the board in uncooked rice is a good idea.  'Silca gel if you have it.

So true.  The move to LED bulbs has gotta be the biggest energy saving thing you can do.  (NOT BUYING AN ELECTRIC CAR -- aka coal powered car).

I just replaced my entire kitchen (12) PAR38's with (12) 3000k 60W LED par38 ... and each is 8 watts instead of 60 watts ... and honestly its much brighter /... and only 13% the energy use now.  And they last 20+ years.  I identified these kitchen lights to be the biggest power hog in my home and very often used.

I have a TED5000 installed in my house main panel ... so I can walk around with my ipad and measure the real time power usage after shutting off things, to see what impact it has.   Honestly most of my house is using CFL already, but the few bulbs that are not CFL or LED are the biggest power hogs left ... need to replace those to get the biggest savings.

Its interesting to see the power usage every night of the lightshow.  Its peaking around 8 kw this year, but in the past I would hit 15+ pretty regularly.  Most songs are running at 3-4 kw peak ... which is just a little about what my house is using without the light show.

Once I get rid of my tree line and spinners, both mini lights ... going 100% LED ... I suspect my show peak will drop even further next year.

I have replaced most of my house lights with LED.  There are a few areas that I really have no choice but to leave the Icans due to the dimmers not working well with LED lights.  I am at the beginning of converting my show to all LED and nodes but even there, some props will need to remain ican because there really is no easy way to convert them.  Fortunately, that really consists of 2 rope lights and two archways.  The inflatables may also remain incan unless I can find some reasonable cost dimmable C7 replacement bulbs.
