Title: *******CLOSED****Lynx Aether Co-Op*************
Post by: wbuehler on July 12, 2010,
Hello,
This Co-op will be for the Lynx Aether Spot/Flood Light.

*******Please read this post, there are a lot of options and conditions on this Co-Op**************

By joining this Co-op you also agree that the Co-op manager, DLA (as a board to also include all administrators, moderators, and members) shall not be held for any liability.  You are joining this Co-op at your own risk.

As with any Co-op this Co-op is subject to the forum rules.  These rules can be reviewed using the following link.

Forum Co-op rules
http://diylightanimation.com/index.php?topic=111.0

This Co-op will close on 8:00 P.M. EST Sunday, July, 25 2010 or sooner if needed.  Once the Co-op is closed, each member will receive a PM with the details of their order including payment amount that is due.  Full payment is expected as soon as the co-op closes. Orders cannot be made until all members have paid.  Please get your Paypal payments in as soon as you get your Co-op invoice PM. Please insure your Paypal address information is current.  Shipping will be by US Postal Service flat rate boxes, shipping is not included in the initial Co-op, and will be determined as soon as individual’s orders are known and boxes size for each order is determined.  Separate PM’s for shipping charges will be sent once orders are sorted and ready to be shipped.

NOTE:
1.   There will be no PCB only kit option.
2.   Using Kit #1 and Kit #2 will get you an assembled PCB .  But you will still need a light case, Aluminum angle, screws and other items as needed based on the       connection methods you wish to use with the Aether Spot/Flood.
3.   The weather resistant RJ45 Jacks will not be included as a kit option.  These just like the light cases, Aluminum angle, screws…etc… can be obtained outside this   Co-Op.
4.   Kit #2 may be used to assembly several Aether Kit #1’s.  You DO NOT need to buy a Kit #2 for each Kit #1.

Here are the pricing details at initial ordering amounts.  Pricing includes Paypal 3% and Coop 3% fees.  As always higher numbers reduce pricing and lower numbers increase pricing.  Change your order as you wish during the ordering portion of the Coop, but please make sure I can tell which kits you are changing and desired numbers.  Please check the order list that follows to make sure I don't miss your order or any changes as the Coop continues and at the end of ordering.

Kit 1 – Aether Kit (Includes electronic parts and PCB)

Per Kit at Qty 25 - $124.16

Kit 2 – Surface Mount Solder Kit.  Includes the following: (Can be used to assemble several Aether's)
•   One Solder Flux Pen
•   One Tube Zeph Paste
•   One Green Paste needle .021”-.023”
•   One Blue Green Paste Needle .015”-.017”
•   One Eco Plunger
•   One pair of sharp nose tweezers
•   One set of Artic Silver Alumina Thermal Paste tubes Part A and Part B

Per surface kit At Qty 25 - $37.00

Post with the quantity of each kit you wish to order in this thread.
****************************************************
Insurance will be added to the package shipping cost, when the shipping PM is sent to you.  Insurance from the USPS is based on value of the package contents.  I am not making this an option, I am sorry if this upsets some but the LED's that are in these kits are not cheap and I would hate to see someone’s package get damaged and then have no way to reclaim the loss.  We cannot be responsible for lost or damaged packages once dropped off to USPS for shipment.

Bill

Thanks for putting together a coop so quickly.

I have two questions:
  - are the acrylic lenses included?  If not, do you have a link to a supplier?
  - do you have a suggestion for the ration of kits 2 to kit 1?

Thanks

Just looking at the total number of kit 1 vs. kit 2 ordered so far, it looks like an 'average' everyone is betting on is 3 kit 1's per kit 2.  Is it reasonable to expect the consumables in kit 2 to do at least 3 kit 1's, possibly more?  I hope so since I only asked for 1 kit 2 and 4 kit 1.

Also just wondering how the final kit 1 price is much more than originally thought- I'm not 'whining' just curious  ;D

It does not take much paste, one Kit #2 should do several Aether PCB's, I can not give an exact number, but it should do quite a few.

Post by: wbuehler on July 14, 2010,
Hello All

I have been asked this question a couple of times now about price.  The opening cost of Kit #1 and #2 is calculated based on a minimum number of kits that need to be sold to continue the Co-Op.  This number is listed in the first post.  As with any Co-Op this cost is only an Estimate based on many factors, one of which is qty of parts and cost of parts...etc... At the end of the Co-Op prices are re-calculated based on qty of parts, cost of parts, shipping...etc... then fees such as Co-Op and PayPal are added.  Once the "Final" Co-Op total has been reached then payment PM's are sent.

No this does not include any Wireless components, RJ will have wireless PCB's that you can then gets parts for from Mouser.  Once his order of PCB's come in he will make a post in the sales area.

So does that equate to?

30M0599 Spot
30M0600 Tight Flood
32M7252 Medium Flood

And we would need 6 lenses per Aether?

The smaller the degree the tighter the light is focused,  These lenses only fit one LED at at time so if you wanted all your leds to have the same lenses you would need 6 per aether.

You do not need the lens for the flood. The Lens are for people who want to custimize the unit to tighter focus. They are not in the kit, just the stuff to build the unit as a flood is.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the "Power LED Illuminator" part numbers.  These are quite inexpensive.

Do these just snap onto the LEDs, or is additional mounting hardware required?

Thanks,

They need nothing else they just snap on. You can do different patterns of them like 6 deg on the two middle ones makes a bright area stright ahead that fades some to the edges.

6 deg on the bottom three narrows the height so it does not send so much light down but gives you the same area up. For normal use no lens is all you have likely seen shown and works well for a large throw flood.  If you have a smaller area to cover the lens gets you a lot more light on that area.

RJ it appears the lenses also offer bulk discounts.  Is there a chance after everyone get their Aethers that there will be a Co op for the lenses?  Gives people the chance to see if the standard works for them or need the lenses (and how many) to complete what they want to do.

Just a thought...   ;D

Not all parts have been ordered yet, But so far of what has been ordered Mouser is trying to get a direct ship of the LED's.
Currently the remaining balance of the LED order is 12 weeks.

I guess this then begs the question as to whether the parts will be here in time to use the Aethers in this year's display.  I had planned on using them this year, but it sounds like that might not be the case.   If not here, I might need to adjust my show some...including the songs I am planning to use.   Even if the sorting and shipping was almost instantaneous, it doesn't sound like we would have parts before early December.  Did I figure that right or does that sound accurate?

Thanks,
-Keith

This is my first year doing this, and my light display will be pretty weak without them. I've already made all my light sequences myself so far with them in mind, and they pretty well revolve around the Aethers.

OK first of all we are talking about Christmas lighting (A Happy-Giving time of the year  ;)) so this is not life or death to me! I was really counting on using mine this year, but it is hard to plan for something that you don't have yet! If I could get one built, that would get me by for this year, but I am willing to wait if others are in more need of them. One question though, are the LEDs the only thing that is going to hold up this COOP? If so, is there another place to get the LEDs from (knowing that they are going to be more expensive)? I am sure that I will be building more Aethers than I have ordered, so I would  be willing to order my LEDs direct and take the ones from the COOP later. Ok so that was two questions! Anyway you look at it, I can wait if needed!

Alternate vendors have already been looked into, the problem is not these LED's are pretty new and not a lot are in stock anywhere.  The order I placed actually drained Mouser of what they had, I did find a small stash with another vendor but the cost was much higher than what Mouser gave use with the bulk pricing.

I'm working on getting the BOM posted.  The BOM I'm using for this Co-Op is different due to needing to sub parts and getting parts from multiple vendors.

Well I for one appreciate those who can wait, but the Aethers were going to be my "main" addition to my show this year.  Since I am still in the building up my show phase (do you ever really get out of this stage btw?  ;D) these would help.

Bill how are you going to do that since Mousers lead times are sometimes accurate and other times under/over stated?  Are you going to ship out some kits early or just wait until everything is in?  Seen the posts above reference it, but no "official" reply.

Curious as it helps me plan "something" for this year as I was planning on using the Aethers for Halloween also (purple / orange and white for lightening effects...  :D ) and wanted to start doing some sequencing work for it.

Thanks in advance

I am still placing part orders as this is a big Co-Op, other parts than just the LED's are on Back Order but have small lead times.  I will not know how things are going to pan out until all parts orders are placed and I have an ideal of what is where.

Thanks for the quick reply, and sounds like you will have a better understand of what/when in a couple of weeks.  I think we all understand how much of an undertaking you committed to by being the COOP manager for this one and we all appreciate it.   <res.

Is there some news about the LEDs?

I'm counting with at least two from the three since is for each side of my house, if there is doubt about the Aehter to make it, then I need to start building MR16s, which is going to take time since I don't have anything yet.

Bill

As much as I'd love to get all my kits at once, getting one early would be helpful so we can become familar with how to assemble the rest if we receive them in early December. Hopefully I can slap the last ones together in a few hours apiece so this year's Christmas light display can be saved (yay!)--or at least for my post-Christmas pre-New Years display. My first Lynx Express took about 6-8 hours from start to finish with all soldering, second-guessing, mounting, paranoia about doing something wrong, wiring up plugs, etc... while the others took about 3 or 4 hours. I figure that an Aether can be done in less time than that?

Would separate shipments mean different costs, though?
Title: Re: *******CLOSED****Lynx Aether Co-Op*************
Post by: Gary on September 11, 2010,
I was wondering... the Aether has PIC chips, right? If so, will the ones that come as part of the co-op come pre-programmed? From what I understand, it's a surface-mounted chip? Can you even pre-program them if they're SMT?
Title: Re: *******CLOSED****Lynx Aether Co-Op*************
Post by: castortiu on September 12, 2010,
No Idea, but I guess the Aether will have the standard 6 pin connector, so after it is soldered you can program it connecting the Pickit to the Aether itself.

I bet RJ has a SMT socket to pre-program them, or the old school method to keep it push with the finger over the PCB while is been programmed  ;D

Check the wiki under Aether.  In the 4th video of the Aether Video Manual that RJ put together he states that the PICs will not be preprogrammed as he has no way to program surface mount PICs.  That is done on the board via the 6 pin ICSP header.  His comments about this are at the end of video 4 at around the 31:00 min mark.

I've got plans for a Halloween display, and am too busy to hav new toys to play with.

Not to hijack this thread and change the subject... I did stumble upon a place in Venice not too far trom the Rialto Bridge (can't remember the name) that had excellent gelato. I think that the trick to know if it's good or not is to look at the Fragola (Strawberry) gelato that the business sells... if it's pink like Strawberry ice cream at home, it'll taste like strawberry ice cream and the other flavors will be like ice cream. If it's red like strawberry puree, the business sells the good stuff.

Mmmmmmm.

About 30 Hrs went into sorting this weekend.  To give an ideal since the SMD parts are hard to identify, once taken out of the main package they are shipped in, each SMD part has to be bagged and labeled for each member.  This alone cost over 900+ labels and zip lock bags.  The good news is that all NON-ESD and ESD to include all the little SMD parts are sorted.  At this point the sorting is in the home stretch of being completed.  All the little SMD zip lock bags will be placed into a main ESD bag and then sealed.

Also enough LED's have come in to include enough for all members to be able to assemble at least one kit.

Quick question..

BOM vs Video.. Not sure If RJ made a change from the Beta to the release, but the BOM lists (and we received (2x 1/2 Watt 3.9Ohms 5% Resistor) which is not listed in the sheet RJ has in the video, but I assume it is for R7?

Also R3 shows two places but from my figuring im guessing also another part change to the 1/4 watt 1.0KOhms 1%) was used instead of the 1.2k listed in the build sheet in the video?

If that is the case the latter I got 1 per kit and it shows 2 places for R3?

My list shows the following:'

R1 - SMD 1/4 Watt 100ohms 1%
R2 - SMD 0.36 ohms 1%
R3- *** Guess is 1.0K Ohms
R4 - 1/4 Watt 330 Ohms 1%
R5 - 1/4 Watt 120 Ohms 1%
R6 - 4.7k Ohms 5%
R7 - 3.9 Ohms 5%

First time I have ever touched SMD and trying to work with what I see, (and not since they are so small).  So any corrections please let me know.

Thanks in advance

Thank you for the dedication and hard work to get this light out this year. It will really make a difference in the light shows.
I received my box today! looking forward to the assembly.

Many Thanks,

As happy as I am about the kits being shipped out, I'm kind of bummed that the PIC chips still have to be programmed, since I don't have a PIC programmer. Now I have to drive an hour to go to someone's place to get it done. It would be nice if the PIC chip was soldered in using the through-hole technique, from what I understand like the way LEDs and connectors for the PIC programmer are installed. If you have some through hole stuff to install anyways, why not the PIC chip as well so it could have been pre-programmed?

Or am I missing something here?

The box arrived 10 minutes after I posted the last message.  Now off to Wally World to get the griddle.  Thanks again  <la...

To keep costs low and other reasons a surface mount pic was used since this was the first attempt at a surface mount kit.  Since the Pic's are SMD's it did not make possible the ability to pre-program them.

I would strongly suggest to anyone the uses a controller or other products that use Pic's to obtain a pic programmer, they can be obtained between $30.00 ~ $40.00.  You never know when you might need to re-program a pic to get a dead controller in your show backup and running again.

Were all in the same boat Gary but think of the experience we'll get doing some new stuff like SMD. I personally can't wait for the challenge. This is not the first time I've got a lesson from RJ and with any luck and the good lords blessing, it won't be the last.

PS - I'd seriously take this opportunity like Bill said and get a programmer. That in and of itself is another challenge/ learning opportunity.   Take it ALL in my friend.  It's a gift.   :)

I'm excited about doing the surface mount stuff, but the timeframe is tight for me to assemble 6 Aethers after going to my brother's place in the U.S. and stay there for 48 hours to pick the kits up to legally avoid paying duties and taxes (hopefully this upcoming weekend), and other stuff going on at work keeping me busy, I'm going crazy here.

I didn't really consider getting a PIC programmer in the past because I didn't think that I'd need one, since this is a DIY web site without the need for special tools other than a soldering iron. I guess everybody has a definition of what a "special tool" is, depending on what you do for a living. I guess a mechanic wouldn't consider a steering wheel puller a special tool. But I sure don't have one.

P.S. Any Canadians here who had stuff shipped to them in Canada directly? Ever deal with duties, taxes, brokerage fees, and all that BS... or is it not as bad as it used to be? I'd like to know for future reference and future orders, because a hassle-free shipment to my place in Canada would have been sweet for my Aether order.

I believe you knew many many months ago that you needed one. your post starts halfway down the page.

I also believe everyone was told up front over and over that the parts had long lead times and this coop could run long.

I wish all it cost me was $40 to develop them for everyone. Try $1600, Thats over $300 for each set of proto pcbs and parts although I did end up with one useable Aether when I was done. But then I still end up paying the same price for the 7 I ordered on the coop as you.

The $40 pic programmer and other little issues would look pretty good to me in comparison.

Here is an updated copy of the Aether Parts Legend.

You will be missing one 1.0K resistor from the kit.  But this is not a show stopper, the 1.0K is used in two places on the PCB one for the Green Led the Other for the Mosfet that controls the optional fan.  If you are not going to use the optional Fan you are OK, if you are going to use the Fan you will need to get another 1.0K resistor.

The 1.0K that is tied to the fan Mosfet is the R3 that is to the right of the Pic chip next to the Mosfet.  The one that works with the green LED is the R3 that is next to the spot for the green LED.  The kits were only charged for one 1.0K resistor not two.

For parts both Mouser and Digikey ship direct to Canada with no duty or brokerage fees. Digikey charges $8.00 for shipping and Mouser doesn't charge anything for orders over $200.00...

I have had several DIY kits shipped (LE's, Aeon, Dongle PCBs) via US postal service and never had to deal with duty or anything...  Same with various orders direct from some US  diy members, again shipped via the US postal shipping boxes rather than via a courier...

Mind you it takes a bit longer as my Aethers have yet to show up across the line......

Awesome Bill thanks didn't want to cook it until I knew.  Any chance to get this thrown up on the WIKI to  make it easy to grab?

Awesome work btw Bill on this and all the very "large" coops you have undertaken this year.  Thank you and bet with all the boxes that have come and gone from your house you have felt like you have moved a couple times? LOL.

Got to work today after a couple days off and my Aether kit was sitting on my desk. I opened it up and looked in the bags and immediately ordered a more powerful set of cheaters. Maybe I should get a jewelers loupe. I hope I don't sneeze during assembly.
I don't know if I will get this integrated in to my display this year, but I look forward to using it.
Thanks to RJ for his design and thanks to Bill for doing the coop.

Bill,

Thanks for running this COOP.  I have received my box of stuff.  Excellent job in running and keeping us up-to-date on the progress.  Thanks to RJ for designing this device for all of our enjoyment!

Aethers have finally made their way to Canada.

Received my package today.

I too am thankful for all the work that went in the design and work surrounding this product and COOP.  I am looking forward to give surface mount a try.

For the benefit of some other Canuck members, please note that it cost me an additionnal $10 per kit in customs and duties.  ($50 for 5 kits)

Cheers!

Okay, I broke down and ordered a Pickit 3. It should be coming directly to my place in Canada in a week or so (none of this driving down to Seattle to my brother's nonsense during these tight time schedules). So, now I shouldn't have to drive an hour each way going to Packetbob's place to program my PIC chips... and then knowing my luck, I'd have to make a few trips because of some unforeseen problems.

Got mine...
Another package made it to Canada...
Cost me $34.03 for two kits though....
This was just for GST/HST taxes and a $5 handling fee from Canada post...
Better than the $30-$40 handling fee that UPS or FedEx charge.....
