I was wondering why the instructions state to NOT socket the USB module? Is it a height thing, or a reliability thing?
What if a machine screw type socket was used? Or better, the zero profile machine pin inserts? I have a handful of those and they are basically socket pins that go directly into the PCB but provides socket capability. Would that work??
I like the idea of being able to replace the module if it goes south...

I wondered that myself. The 2 dongles I built both had problems with the USB module. The first I was able to modify and add a jumper wire for the 5VDC. It is still working. The second had problems with the USB module also.
Maybe it has something to do with guys with Star Trek type names?

It might be because you have to plug the USB into it and if you do that enough you might pop it out and shock it.

Both answers are correct. The proto had issues over time pluggin it in and out as the connector is high above the connectionline so any pushing lifts up the front.
They would not fit in the cases I designed them for with a standard socket.
Failure have been rare and I only know of the ones talked about where they died off the bat. This I believe was a combination of Usb ports that where not exactly on spec and a production issue on the modules. This is based on talks with the manuafactor of the module.
