for transmitting...
you need
TX/RX pcb, case,and parts (kits 1,2,and 3)
you only need one of these to do the transmitting (jumper set to TX)
FOR RECEIVING
if you want to receive to any dmx device...
you need
TX/RX pcb, case, and parts (kits 1,2,& 3)
you can place this anywhere, and connect to a device, then continue with other devices with cat5 cable (also note, the TX/RX has a power cable to power it) (jumper set to RX)
if you want to receive on an express...
you need
EX/RX pcb, and parts (kits 4 & 5)
you can setup one, or all of your Expresses for wireless, then you can setup wired devices off the DMX OUT 2 port on the Express (don't forget to remove the REMOVE FOR WIRELESS jumper)
if you want to receive on a single ssr4, mr16, or Freestyle...
you need
EX/RX pcb, and parts, and the socket adapter (kits 4,5 & 6)
going this route, you would need this for every device you wanted to connect to wireless in this manner. plus, you can't add wired devices for the dmx out of that part (forexample, the ssr4 [also note the ssr4 NEEDS to have the DMX addon for it to work with wireless])

Are you saying that the following scheme will not work?
EX/RX --> SSR/DMX --> SSR/DMX --... -->SSR/DMX

The Ex/Rx cannot be used that way. The Ex/Rx when used on the DMX/SSR4 replaces the 485 chip and outputs the signal that the 485 would have directly to the Pic. Since it doesn't output the RS485 protocol to the input connection, there will be no signal on the output connector either. If you want to connect multiple SSR/DMX units to a receiver, you need to use the standalone TX/RX in receive mode at the head of the chain.

The only thing I would add is that having a backup transmitter could be key to keeping your show running if the primary TX failed. I use my backup for testing on the workbench and also for testing out in the yard during setup. I also have a backup EXRX. The version 2 TX/RX can also be a receiver so having an extra TXRX can also provide backup receiving capability.

Also, be aware that if you want to run an EX/RX in a DMX SSR4 that it can be a little dicey. I had a lot of trouble with the EX/RX rebooting. It turns out that the power supply in the DMX SSR4 is being pushed pretty hard to drive both the DMX decoder and the EX/RX. To improve performance, you need to leave the power and data LEDs off and make sure you have a heavy power run to the "Wireless DMX SSR4".
I was using a ~100 foot 16 guage power cord to get power out to three of these with a total of 12 strings of 50 mini-lights and could not get stable operation. When I put a TX/RX in box and went wired for those DMX SSR4s, I did not have any more problems.

I am curious if a RX and TX pair of wireless devices can be used between the dongle and the first DMX device and then all other DMX devices are in the multidrop RS485 chain. Also, if this is possible can the wireless link keep up with the demand?
In other words computer and Dongle inside the house and everything else outside, of course. This would keep you from running a data wire out the window or something.

Yep....You can do it. I started out wired last year, built my two TX/RX devices about Dec 15th and switched over to wireless...so it's definitely possible.

yes, you can use the wireless to get past a physical barrier (don't want to drill a hole through a wall for a signal cable) the wireless broadcasts the untire dmx universe as sent from the dongle anyways, so it does not matter.
And I just posted the guide so that people can figure out what the MINIMUM would be needed based on their needs.
as far as getting extras for backup in case something breaks, that would be your personal preference.

So If I just want to maybe have a couple expresses (In my yard) connected via. wired, then at the end of that chain ... put a tx/rx ... could I then jump a driveway to an express (next door) with an ex/rx ... and then continue that chain (next door) with wired between LE #3 and LE #4 ?

yes, just make sure if you go wireless to a LE, then want to go wired off of that, you have to use the DMX2 OUT port on that LE that's receiving it's signal via wireless
if distance is an isue, there's a way to make a repeater, but i don't want to further confuse people. there should be a link around here somewhere for it. (involves two TX/RX's tied together)

I had a dongle and a rxtx inside set to transmit
An exrx in a freestyle
an exrx in an express, daisy chaned to a second express and then a dmx ssr4
and a rxtx feeding a chain of 3 dmx ssr4 units.
