Title: LedTricks II Example
Post by: wbuehler on October 30, 2011,
Here is an Example of a LedTricks II using flexstrips.  This is just my ideal, it is not meant as the word of law.
I spoke with others and we talked about different designs and I decided to try using flexstrips, so that at then end of the season it could be rolled up and put away in effect making storage easy.

I used 8 full flex strips that were then cut in half.  This produced 16 strips that contained 60 nodes each.
8 SSC's and the etherdongle are driving the display.  The sign has a total channel count of 2,880.

I would like the thank RJ, JJ and all the J's as this would have not been possible without the RGB hardware and software.  I would like to thank all those that have help over the past couple of weeks that have help breath life into this beast.  Also thanks to the various animated software vendors/creators.

Thanks Bill for showing your setup. It looks like a fairly easy set up to do.  Only thing easier would be to convince a LED supplier to build a flexible strip 16 x 60 though I am sure the price would be triple from the way you did it.

Bill:
Great job. I will probably try to do the "LEDTRICKS II" sign next year. I keep hoping that the software will catch up to the needs. Great job.

All the hardware worked well last night, We had a simple loop that scrolled the following for 4Hrs straight with no issue.

1. Happy
2. Halloween
3. Candy

Yes very basic I know, but I was pleased as I can stand across the street from the house which is about 150' and read the sign with no issues.
It should make a Nice Tune To as well as add to the show.  Many trick or treaters were drawn to the house because of and commented on the sign.
I was a bit worried as it was only tested for a few minutes prior to putting it outside.

I tried to take video but the sign is just to blinding for a cell phone camera.

Great to hear!  I might have put up:
   1. No
   2. Costume
   3. No
   4. Candy

But hey with the 400 trick or treaters i get at my yard haunt that would have been more appropriate.  Thanks for sharing Bill  <pop..

4. Treaters
4. At All

Well, we actually had 6.  It's a good thing I forgot to get that extra candy.

Great setup, I have been thinking about something similar for next year. I have also been working on a marquee that will use 20 8X8 RGB matrix panels, 1280 pixelnet nodes. Something similar to those led message signs. I plan on having synchronized lyrics during the show, and show time count down the rest.

Have Fun

This is pretty high on my list for next year, although it may be a little out of my price range with 16 rows. Do you think the sign would still be readable with only 8 or 10 rows?

I built one of the LED Tricks displays two years ago using 2 panels across and I love it. I want to build an RGB version as soon as I can figure out the software issues. To answer your question, if you want the sign to be readable from the street, it has to be at least 16 pixels (rows) high. Otherwise, the letters are really to small to read, at least in my opinion. My sign has to be back from the road at least 20 feet because of the layout of my yard. I hope this information helps. Jim
