i'm thinking of building a version of for my display.
how many pixels across is your ledtriks?
how many pixels tall is your ledtriks?
is your ledtriks set up like A? or B?

I'm using 8 rigid strips mounted so that the horizontal and vertical spacing of the LEDs is the same.
8 x 30 (LEDs)

You get the idea.
It's 240 RGB LEDs = 720 actual channels

I used light show pro - it supports the back and forth numbering.
The video in the corner shows what was mapped onto the tree.
Animation on the sign was done using the matrix animator in LSP.

That's really cool. Can't wait to get RGB going.

Also, I was one of the early ss node orders... There were about 4 malfunctioning strings when I shot the video.
Most of those nodes started working again after drying out for a few weeks...
The rigid strips also had issues near the end, but they also cleared up after drying out. This year I'll either build a case or wrap the sign in plastic...
The new IP68 nodes are sealed where the IP67 nodes I have we're not.

I would avoid using plastic as that tends to trap moisture and holds it against the nodes until it gets in. What may work would be to build a case for it with a plastic or plexi front and vents. This would protect the nodes from direct water contact and still let the humidity escape.

what's the minimum size (pixels by pixels) to be able to see text clearly?

That really depends on the size of the sign, the size of the characters forming the text on the sign, and how far away it is.

i'm tossing around the idea of using either 1 foot by 8 feet or 2 feet by 4 feet with nodes and 1 inch spacing...
1,152 nodes , 9 sscs, 3456 channels, or 84% of a pixelnet universe!!!

If 1 foot is your minimum then why don't you get some scrap and build a 1 X 1 test grid an drill the holes 1 inch apart in both directions. This will use 144 nodes and will let you experiment with letters at different distances. You could even play with the resolution by lighting every other node ehile forming the letters to see what looks good.

the holes are already made, i'm using black modular plastic pegboard
i'm waiting on the leds to come in, and was seeing if there might be a better route.
so i wanted to see what others have used.

You can do 5x5 characters, but 5x7 looks better and 5x9 if you want lower case. (WxH)
You need at least 5 characters wide to be useable...
If you want better than dot matrix fonts, you are going to need more vertical and horizontal pixels.
Mine was 8x30 and I never touched the bottom row... It was also a lot more work than I expected.
If you want to map video to it, you need to plan 4x3 increments or the video will be stretched to fit...
In LSP, you can drop a video effect on a layer. You just define the layer to include the matrix and then make your video. I forget the parameters that I used last year for the video, but I'm hoping a new version of LSP will be more forgiving this year... I could only drop about 30 seconds at a time and topped out at about 7 videos...

I have been wondering the benefits to lsp and it sure makes things like that seem easier. What program did you make the videos for your tree with?

I do video for my church and as a hobby, so I have access to the full version of adobe premiere. You should be able to accomplish the same thing with any video program that allows creation of moving titles. I just made 4 bars of each color. One horizontal, one vertical, one 45 degrees to the right and one 45 degrees to the left. Loaded them into a title and moved it from left to right or right to left except for the horizontal, which I moved up and down.

Does nutcracker have the ability to program this any easier?
Since I am asking, another thread in the LEDTriks forum shows one made of 8 flexible strips cut in half for a 16 node x 60 node matrix. Given the option, would you use more rows knowing that the strips are only 30 nodes wide?
