Title: Pickit information.
Post by: sittinguphigh on September 22, 2012,
I have no one in my area to help program my hard ware.
So I need to know what tools I will need to down load the firmware.
I know I need a pickit 3. Will that work for all hard ware?
What else will I need?

Thanks

Mort

For most stuff, the pickit 3 is all you need.  For older stuff, like the usb single, Mr16, and freestyle, you would need a little adapter board to hold the PIC while you flash it.

What and were can you get this adapter board if I need it?

Does the firmware ever need up dating or a redue?

Thanks

Here is a chart showing what each board/pic needs for adapter boards from a supplier most members use. The links will take you to the site to purchase the adapters.

Yes there are times when a firmware gets updated to either fix a problem or to add new abilities to the board.

J1sys sells them but as Chris said, with the exception on a few older pieces, most of the boards have an ICSP header and the Pickit simply plugs into it.  There are times when you may need to reflash some of the devices.  Some of them have test firmware, others have both DMX and Pixelnet Firmware, sometimes new features are added such as the conductor, and of course, there is always the chance for a revision to fix a bug that got past beta testing.
