Post by: sabie on September 23, 2012,
the etherdongle magic jack is connected to computer via swap cable
I'm using lor s3 for my show everything is flashed dmx
the magic jack flashes occasionally
the other jack is connected to le version 5

see attached setup in software
does anyone know what i'm doing wrong
i checked the le with a lynx usb dongle it worked fine
also regulators are hot to touch but voltage out is as expected when measured with voltmeter

I can't help directly as I don't have my ED yet but maybe this will help.

is this on a laptop, or desktop?
Title: Re: the green led is on the show no pass, also no work with start channel utility

desktop running windows 7 64 bit
connecting etherdongle to router
the software lor control panel see's the etherdongle best i can tell
the start channel software i was running with lor software unloaded which shuts down control panel software so the start channel software could talk to it
upon close examination i think the 2 lower far right pins appear to be shorted to the small flat pack

just for giggles, lets try to run just vixen (even though it's not your normal app) with the etherdongle plugin for dmx, when you run a sequence (make make up some random stuff for a quick sequence of like 10 secs) does the mag jack light flash more frequently than when the sequence stops? this is the quickest very simple way to test, then we can try to see if it's hardware, software, or network settings

I am looking at your pictures and notice a couple of close points that may be soldered together.  Can you check all of your joints?  I think trying in Vixen is a good idea for verifying also.

ok, so it looks as if the etherdongle is responding to the network connection...

so does the Lynx Express (16 outputs) flash when you run it's onboard self test?

the express works fine with a usb dmx dongle and passes all test
and the data link light is" on" when le is connected to etherdongle

I know that I do not have an ED, but just wondering if the ED uses a different network cable compared to the USB dongle (Trying to ask does it need a cross-over or a straight through cat5 cable) to the express board?

etherdongle is flashed for dmx? can you verify the checksum?

combustionmark also posted awhile ago about a firewall issue. Could your firewall on the computer be stopping the DMX multicast?

swap with another cable you know that works (just to make sure you rule it out)

see if the dmx lights up on the le, when you run a sequence

I would look at the Opto's and 485 chips since it sounds like you aren't getting output fromt he dongle.  Any bent pins? Are they seated?

since your LE works with the usb dongle, then it might be with what parts output on the eD.   this is as far as i can take you.

I think your eD might have an output issue

One thing that I would look at are a few of your resistor values.  Your camera's color capture and/or the lighting used to take these last pictures has a bit to be desired but I think that I can see two resistors that look like the wrong value.  The one is the resistor right under the Magic jack.  The lighting on those two is pretty bad but it doesn't look like a 240 ohm to me.  The other is the resistor right above the smaller SMD chip.  It should also be a 240 ohm and doesn't look like orange yellow brown to me.  It appears that both of the resistors mentioned that you put in are the same value but don't look correct.  Like I said, it's hard to see them in these pictures but it's worth taking a look at.

thanks i will check tonight under magnifying lamp doesn't look red-yellow-brown to me either i will lift and check with a meter tonight they appear to be red yellow blaack with the naked eye maybe 24 ohms instead of 240 ohms
Title: Re: the green led is on the show no pass, also no work with start channel utility
Post by: mokeefe on September 27, 2012,
I think all those resistors you are referring to are 1% resistors and use a different color code.  They look like red-yellow-black-black-brown which is a 240 ohm 1% resistor.  I agree the colors don't look completely accurate in the picture, but that may just be a photographic anomaly.  Assuming all these resistors came from a coop, it's unlikely they are incorrect or any 24 ohm resistors even came in the kit.

Maybe you have a bad opto or 485...  Have you tried to switch them around and see if you get anything?  Be careful with them if you try to do this though, and if you don't feel comfortable doing it then please don't.  They can be a pain to get out without bending pins unless you have a set of tools to pull them with.

Is the ED flashed with Pixelnet or DMX Firmware?

Steve

Sorry, just saw that you answered this previously.
Title: Re: the green led is on the show no pass, also no work with start channel utility

It really sounds ro me like you are somehow broadcasting on the wrong universe.  Remember that the etherdongle sends out 4 universes of either Pixelnet or DMX depending on the firwmare loaded into it and each universe is being sent on a seperate pair.  If your device is connected to pair one (universe 1) and your data is being sent on pair 2 (universe 2) then this is exactly what will happen.  Also make sure that the ehternet cable connected to the output is ok and NOT a crossover cable.

Post by: sabie on September 28, 2012,
it is a straight ethernet cat 5 cable i checked it with a tester
also it is the same cable i used with the usb dongle and it worked fine
the software is sending universe 1 as it is the same show i used with usb dongle
the only differance it the network setting in lor s3 is set for e31.1
but i will go back and look again at control panel in lors3

I plan to to use the ED with S3 this year and ordered a combiner to split the signal as I plan on using two universes.  I didn't think about using it without.  I'm curious how the pairs work but I would think they would be the same as an LE but this may not be the case.

Sorry, I know that I am new to this and just trying to help, but am I missing something. what DMX light??? The LE's have 19 LED's 1 for each output (16), 1 for 3.3 volt, 1 for 5 volt and the last for Data link
again I have to ask if there is an issue with your firewall not opening port # 5568

There are 4 universes and each one is on it's own pair.  Universe 1 is on the same pair that the USB dongle uses.  The combiner would be an excellent debugging tool to see if you are sending data on the wrong universe.

The data light is sometimes referred to as the DMX light.

What you may want to do is download and install XLights.  Then you can configure it for the Ehterdongle and set up one universe.  It has a pretty good test mode where you can tell it to flash sections of or the complete universe.  If the Express responds to it with XLights then you will know that there is a configuration issue with S3 and if it still doesn't work, then you know that the probelm is in the EtherDongle somewhere.

just for giggles, assign an IP address to your computer if you're connecting directly to the EtherDongle.

try something like 192.168.1.57

It must be a software setup issue as I have it running a show outputting DMX fine on my bench out of the box.

I have since built two and have them running with LOR S3 3.8 and Windows XP and switch.  Been running for days.  I switch them every few days and they keep ticking. If the unit works for RJ it must be a how LOR is configured,  cat5 cable or the PC.  I had to use a regular cat 5 cable as a crossover would not even work.

Hopefully something here helps.
