Icicle Light Question
« on: December 05, 2012, »
I got a question on hanging icicle lights. Most strands of icicle lights have a short leg on one end of the string and a long leg on the other end. Should I make sure the icicle strings are all oriented the same way or would it be okay to orient the strings so I have shorter and equal lengths of power cables to them? I am concerned about how the lights would look if I orient them differently. Orienting them all the same way makes me feel like I am going to use a ton of SPT.

p.s. The wife's request was for them to all be oriented the same direction.

Thanks for the feedback.

I put some up for my mother and I put two from one end and one from the other so the power met in the middle.

I'm not sure how you could tell the difference.  Mine strings didn't hang straight yet though. I do like to see somebody that really cares how things look.  I'm glad I only have to satisfy myself though.

Rick,

That is always great advice.

The more I think about it I believe that in the end it would be about the same amount of SPT used either which way. So I am probably just going to go with keeping the wifehappy and not even worrying about it.

At some point after I get everything set up (hopefully this weekend) I will try and post some pictures as to how I hang my icicles and how I am putting my LE's on the roof.

Putting LE's on the roof is starting to scare me.  I hate putting lights up there.

Another good point. The main reason I hung my icicle lights the way I did was to keep myself off the roof. I just need to suck it up and get more SPT wire and vampire plugs.

I ran a bunch on the front of my garage last year after I had new shingles on.  It keeps my time on the roof less and it also looks nicer.  I justed used 2 1x2 boards in the shape of and L, painted them the color of the house  and laid the SPT in the channel.  Looks nice and works nice.

SPT cord is cheap compared to shingles and injuries.

Do you have any pictures you could post showing how the channel looks.

I installed hooks in the eaves and then attached my four colors of icicles to 1/2" pvc with eye bolts on them. Relatively simple and running power cords from the hooks should not be to big of a problem.

i also put my icicles on 1/2'' pvc. my neighber gave me a box of zinc coated brackets 8 months ago that i have been kicking around the garage and wondering what the heck i was going to do with them(about 300 pieces) then i started this hobby and the pvc frames. i bent the brackets to work for what i was doing. they curve over the pvc and then i zipped tied the other part to the gutter nail.
