Mouse without Borders
« on: September 22, 2011, »
Here's an interesting item I ran across: Mouse without Borders.  It lets you control up to four PCs simultaneously with one keyboard and one mouse. It's sort of like a KVM switch but done entirely in software.  It even allows you to drag and drop files from one computer to another.

Microsoft runs a project called The Garage.  It is intended as a place where ideas can be explored and developed. Ideas that pan out are often added to future Microsoft products. This one got released as a free, standalone product.  It only works on Windows systems.

Microsoft posted a YouTube video that shows how it works. (The demo starts about one minute into the 2:16-minute video.)

You can read more about it — and find the download link — in the TechNet blog, "Microsoft download from The Garage: Mouse without Borders."

I have installed it on 2 of my XP machines and it works!  I can eliminate a keyboard and mouse from my desk!

That looks pretty cool! I've been using Multiplicity for this same task and it is awesome, but it is not free.

This is the same thing:

It's called Synergy. It's free and open source. It is also cross platform.
It has cut and paste form one computer to the other just like the Microsoft one.

But after watching the video I am going to give the Microsoft one a shot because it has

a) drag and drop from PC to PC.
b) lock and unlock all PCs at once.

Two things that you really want when you start using this type of software.

I use the built in remote desktop in windows.  It that program that much different?  I drag and drop files all the time from one pc to the other.  I have complete control of both pc's with one mouse and one keyboard.  I guess I am missing something.

I've been running You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login for about a year now on my 7 computers with great success.  It's also free and supports encryption of the communication channels.
