Chisel tips
« on: July 12, 2012, »
I was thinking of replacing my Radio Shack dual power soldering station with conical tip to one recommended in the assembly manuals in the WIKI and wondered what size chisel tips work best for general board assembly and also in case I ever have to do surface mount repair.  Looks like the 2 choices are .8 and 1.6 but which does everyone prefer? The tip RJ used in the Advanced soldering lab at the Academy looked pretty small. Also what temps does everyone use?

I found for most  of the soldering .8 works well. As mentioned in some of the wiki assembly manuals, just turn up the temp for some of the bigger soldering joints.  Just my opinion

Looks like the .8 is out of stock right now. What temp do you use? My current one just has 20 watt and 40 watt switch.

I've been using the 0.8 chisel tip, with the iron set at about 400 degrees F, then I turn it upto about 460 degrees F for the larger soldering joints.

The solder station I'm using is this one here (about $90 on ebay):

Pete, my solder station is essentially the same without the digital temp display.

Where would you buy new tips? I didn't get a small chisel tip but need one.

Are talking 'C' or 'F' ?  Solder will not melt at 400 deg 'F'.

Mine is a GQ Electronics 5200 (about $80 off ebay).

Mine came 10 different tips, but you can buy replacements here:

Then again, perhaps soldering tips are standard sizes?

The chisel tip I use is the 0.8 chisel tip (900M-T-0.8D)
Looking at the link below, these tips probably would fit my soldering iron:
