Using the ED for one universe.
« on: November 08, 2012, »
I have built an Eather dongle. I wanted to use this because eventually I want to add a conductor.

But at this time I only have need for 1 universe for now so I plan on flashing the chip to run DMX.

But I will still need a combiner to split out the 4 different universes?

Does the Eather dongle have to send out 4 universes?

Just because it sends out 4 universes doesn't mean you have to use all 4 universes

It will work just find using 1 universe

The ED always puts out 4 universes of signal but you can just ignore it.

If you want Universe 1, then the ED is wired for that purpose. The other three universes are accessible via a Hub or a Combiner/De-Combiner or some sort of splitter.

To use the Conductor for normal DMX, you MUST use an Active Hub. The Conductor only puts out Pixelnet (for now), but you can extract a perfectly good DMX-512 universe with an Active Hub. With enough Active Hubs, you could run a 32 Universe DMX-512.

Thanks Jon

I totally skipped over the DMX part of the question

Since a conductor is not a possibility this year I have to run off my computer.

Si i will flash the ED for Dmx, hook it to the computer and then just plug in a regular old cat5 and run it to my LE? Then from my LE I just run on to my other devices?

That's it?

pluging in an LE into an EtherDongle directly will use the first pins which is universe 1 (which is what you want to do)
To rule the entire tri-state area!  What's that? Perry the Platypus!!!

That's how I ran part of Halloween this year.

But, if you only need one DMX universe, then you could use Conductor and an Active SS Hub to get the DMX. Perhaps more complicated than you'd like, but it would work. :)
