I've got a mix of version 1 & 2 SSC, do I really have to do the H/W mod and also upgrade all my SSC to the latest F/W?

I haven't had a single issue with any of FlexStrips with the current H/W and F/W.

Nope you don't have too. But if you want to use the latest firmware or the latest version of the SS utility then you will have to do the h/w mod

I haven't touch my SSC yet.

Off the top of my head

New features (i.e.: Grouping)
One firmware for all SSCs
compatible of all new software (firmware and SS Utility)

If you are not having problems, Rick pretty well covered it.

If you are making new ones, you should go ahead and make them v3. It's easier to modify the board when there are no components in the way.

The v3 will consume less power due to the larger pull up resistor and put less stress on the pic's internal circuitry. Not big deals, but every little bit helps.

The real issue is that the Ver 3 supplies the proper control signal voltage which allows for both more reliable operation and the use of longer distances between the controller and the first node if needed.  The Ver 1 and 2 are a bit low on the signal voltage which could cause some strings to fail to operate properly and required a very short distance between the controller and the first node.  As Rick said, once the modes are done, then you can use the same firmware for all versions which gives you the new options currently available to the Ver 3 controllers.
