Green Aether
« on: November 15, 2012, »
I load the test sequence and all colors work from one to the other as it should.
I load the aetherII firmware and i get a constant green.
I try to set the address for it and it stays green. Ive used both Lynx Address utility and start channel.
I am using my Dmx flashed dongle.
Any suggestions?

Reflash with test software and retest.

Look for scratches on inside of case - something might have shorted when assembling it.

Are you using the pickit programming utility? Do not try to use mplab...

I reflashed with test firmware and aether goes thru all colors as normal.
I then flash using pick it utility and same green.

When you flash with the Aether II firmware do you get the correct check sum?
Are both switches flipped toward the LED?
If you flip the outside (left) switch to the left (away from the LED) does it make a difference?
What are you using to test the Aether II ?
Hang in there we will get it working for you!

Hi Jeff, See beleow
When you flash with the Aether II firmware do you get the correct check sum? YES
Are both switches flipped toward the LED? YES, when i first power the Aether they are both towards the LED and is already green.
If you flip the outside (left) switch to the left (away from the LED) does it make a difference? Stays Green
What are you using to test the Aether II ? The test firmware and just plugged into DC, will not connect to LE
Hang in there we will get it working for you! Sounds Good :)

Ill be in chat for a while.

Try connecting it to either a USB Lynx Dongle (flashed DMX) or EtherDongle (flashed DMX) and LSP's Hardware tester and see if that make a difference.
As RJ put it the LYNX Ather II is a pretty simple device, when power is applied the PIC supplies 3.3 volts to the 4 LED Regulators turning off the LED's (Hence sometimes you get the flash of light) SO something is causing the PIC to leave on Green, then next step is to see if you can communicate with the Aether II with DMX making the other colors come on and off and work from there.

K, ill do that when i get home today. FYI I do have another Aether working properly, i can connect that one to my LE and it works. I connect the other Aether to the LE and then connect my good aether to that one and no lights.

Remove it from the case, get some glasses and a strong light, then examine the underside of the pcb. I had a similar problem with one of mine last year and found that I had stripped some of the wires a bit long..when I soldered them into the board, one was leaning a bit and touched another lead. From above, everything looked OK. Had to take some tiny side cutters and slide them between the board and heatsink to nip off the long/bent ends.

Good Luck,
Mike E.

If the test firmware is cycling the colors properly (red, green, blue, and white) then the pic and regulators have to be working properly. That leaves the DMX parts...

try swapping the 485 chip with another device
Verify the orange/white-orange wires are not reversed
Check to make sure only the last item in the dmx chain is terminated
Do all of this with the heat sink outside the case. If the behavior changes when you put the heat sink in the case, something is shorting to the case...

If the test software gives you yellow, green, cyan, white, then the green channel is shorting to the case...

The Aether II uses 12VAC doesn't it?
