transitioning from vixen to xlights
« on: December 13, 2012, »
I'd like to give xlights a shot to run my show.

I don't recall exactly the problem I had with port # when I first hooked up the dongle, but I ended up assigning com 25 and it worked fine (and still does). now that I want to go with xlights, com 25 is not available. I tried to reassign a different port # to the dongle via vixen but was not successful. I assume I am missing a step somewhere.
How can I assign #25 in xlights or can I change the port # assigned to the dongle to something that is available with xlights?
Thanks!
AL.

You change the dongle com port in the windows device manager.

The steps are slightly different depending on what version of windows you are using.

Rick,

You are correct, what I meant to say is that I changed the com port in device manager and changed the port configuration for the Enttec dmx usb pro in Vixen.
I used the port finder utility which confirmed the new port allocation; however, vixen would return an error message when trying to run a sequence.
BTW, my operating system is XP SP3

But now that you change the com port you should be able to use xLights to run the show.

it should but even with vixen it would not work. I gave up as I was running out of time and reverted back to com 25. I'll try again this weekend but obviously I was not doing this right.
What about xlights and using com 25? anyway it can be done? Thanks.

com port 25 is really high, and that might be causing some of your issues

No idea what happened last time I tried to work on this. Today I assigned com 8 and it worked fine with both vixen and xlights. First time using xlights... very neat!
Sorry for the troubles with this post but in fact your comments helped me and put me back in the right direction! Thanks!
