Pin on the CF card reader broke off.
« on: December 20, 2012, »
I found a pin bent on the CF card reader. Went to bend it back in place and it broke off.
What are my options?

I'm guessing that you will have to replace the socket.

Has any one replaced the cf card reader on the conductor yet. Is it possible?

Have you tried your Conductor since you broke the pin off?  You may get lucky and broke a pin that is not needed. If it doesn't work most likely will either contact RJ AFTER the Holidays or see if anyone else could replace the card reader as it is a very tricky job.

No I haven't. But I will try it. But I don't think it will work.
The pin was bent to the point it was not connecting and it didn't work.

But I was thinking on buying a cheap card reader and taking it apart and using the card reader inside.

Have you taking one apart?

The 13th pin broke off. One of the power pins. I don't think CF card will work without that.
Tried putting in the CF no connection.

Is there any one that has taken apart the CF card reader?

Earlier Keith posted a link to a CF socket.  It looks like the same one on the board

I would try that route first.  If it is the same part, then the soldering points will match up.  If you use a card reader, then you will probably end up soldering a bunch of tiny wires and you will have to figure out some way to mount it.

Caretaker is right, it looks like a very difficult job.  I've had to resolder all 4 sockets on my conductors and slaves and that was a beast.  In those cases I didn't have to worry about the alignment of the pins during soldering because the tabs in the front were soldered down.  If you do attempt it, make sure you have a pen of no-clean liquid flux, desoldering wick, and a good magnifier.

I would like to use this before Christmas once.

Is there any way to by pass the CF card reader or intercept it.
I thinking if I could some how use the card readers connects on the rear I could solder on to them.
Maybe use a  cable connector.

Or maybe fix the card reader.

Some how connect form the back side of the reader with a wire and feed it to the CF were the pin is missing.

You could solder thin wire to the board and then solder it to the connectors on the back of the socket of the doner card reader.  But I count 20 vias through the board and 4 connections on the top for the CF socket.  Would it be possible to cut that one pin and pull it out of the CF socket and replace it with something else?  Just to get you through the season?  That is a mighty thin wire though.

What do I have to loose. It's not working now and it may work.
The card reader has to be replaced or the whole board.
There are no boards in the store.
I will try to pull the pin out to start with.
Then try both ways.
I got a CF card reader to take apart to try to use.
