Active hub to passive 4 port
« on: December 22, 2012, »
Do I need to run a cat5 from the pixelnet out to the passive hub or can I just use any of the existing 16 jacks to the passive hub. The reason I ask is my active hub is on the roof and I have several cat5 cabls coming down to SSCs around my windows. I just built a passive hub and was going to throw in a last minute expansion. I really don't want to get on the roof in this weather. It would be great if I could just use an existing cable that was originally meant for an SSC as the input on the passive hub

Thanks

Ryan

the 4 port passive hub was meant and designed to be used from one of the 16 ports of the bigger hubs.

You do this b/c the 16 port hubs, control which "universe" of pixelnet to use where the 4port doesn't have that setting.

(NOTE: you "can" plug in into the 2 pixelnet outputs of the 16 port hub, but you would only ever get the 1st universe.)

Thanks! I was hoping that was the case. Can I do the same thing with another active hub if I am only running one universe?

I don't think i'd do that, as there would be 12v power running on the other 6 pins of the cable between them, that might cause harm if a jumper was misplaced.

for best practice,
use the 2 pixelnet ports to go to other 16 port hubs,
use the 16 ports to go to 4port passive hubs, SSC's, and DSC's
