Looking for one of these. Also what does the on board power transformer do? do these need to be powered?

chrisatpsu:
the transformers provide power to the chips so they can regenerate the signal on the "split" ports.
yes, they need to be powered.

JonB256:
The board does need power, but the transformer is only used if you are powering from 110V AC. In the build instructions, it tells you how to use jumpers instead of the transformer, and then power the board from 12 to 24V. If you install the Bridge Rectifier, capacitors and voltage regulator, you can use either low voltage AC or DC. Most low voltage "landscaping" transformers are 12 or 24V AC and pretty cheap. You may have one lying around.

As for where you can get them, the store currently does not carry them (at least I cold not find them when I just looked at it).

I think I might have 1 or 2 unpopulated PCB's laying around from a couple of years ago.  If you need one, send me a PM and I'll go see if I can find them.  I might point out though that the LE kind of got rid of the need for the splitter since DMX out 2 is in effect a split signal.  The DMX stream is regenerated (might be a bad choice of words) when using DMX OUT 2 as opposed to relayed using DMX OUT 1.
