My single strand wishlist
« on: August 11, 2013, »
Here are some thoughts I have on single strands.  Knowing how you guys operate, you probably already have all these on your list.  These are just things I have been thinking about.

Single Strand wishlist
chases with a choice of colors and number of contiguous pixels
choice of gap length in pixels before starting next chase
choice of second color on a chase so that a gap could be another color or no color or fade between colors
choice of direction
choice of speed
fade / ramp option for tail end for use with multiple pixel option

collisions
two chases starting at opposite ends and passing thru each other
same options as chases

color washes
one color fading in or out
two colors fading in or out
choice of fade speed
choice of / limits to brightness - both high and low

twinkle / random effect
choice of percentage of pixels
color choices - all colors, one color, two colors, etc

I have most of these effects built (to similar specs as you mentioned) in a series of independent Python programs.   My hope is to meet/talk with Sean on how to share them with Nutcracker.

Why wouldn't spirals meet your need for a chase? Spirals have many of options and they work great on single strands.

Also note that the updated meteors effect in 3.1.1 works well on single strands when displayed using the left, right, implode, or explode option. The only thing with meteors is that they trigger at random times.

And while true collisions aren't there yet, you can set Effect 1 to spiral in one direction and Effect 2 to spiral in the other, set mixing to layered and come close.

I will add on to Matt's comments

Here are some thoughts I have on single strands.  Knowing how you guys operate, you probably already have all these on your list.  These are just things I have been thinking about.

Single Strand wishlist
chases with a choice of colors and number of contiguous pixels. SPIRALS, USE THICKNESS TO CHANGE NUMBER OF PIXELS
choice of gap length in pixels before starting next chase. NOT YET
choice of second color on a chase so that a gap could be another color or no color or fade between colors. SPIRALS CAN HAVE UP TO 6 COLORS
choice of direction. SPIRALS CAN DO THIS
choice of speed. SPIRALS CAN DO THIS
fade / ramp option for tail end for use with multiple pixel option. SPIRALS 3D WILL FADE TAIL. ALSO YOU CAN FADE IN and FADE OUT

collisions
two chases starting at opposite ends and passing thru each other. LIKE MATT SAID, DO EFFECT 1 SPIRAL ONE WAY, EFFECT 2 SPIRAL OTHER WAY
same options as chases

color washes
one color fading in or out. COLORWASH
two colors fading in or out COLORWASH
choice of fade speed COLORWASH
choice of / limits to brightness - both high and low. NOT YET

twinkle / random effect   TWINKLE
choice of percentage of pixels  TWINKLE
color choices - all colors, one color, two colors, etc  TWINKLE

WE DO NOT HAVE COLLISIONS WHERE THE CHASE WILL BOUNCE BACK.
WE HAVE SOME SPACING OPTIONS BUT NOT THE FULL CHOICE YOU MAY BE LOOKING FOR

thanks

I have a "back and forth" effect for my arches and I can set the exact time (in 50ms increments) that it takes for the cursor to do one back and forth cycle.  The way you could do this in NC is to have a spiral in one direction, a spiral in the opposite direction and paste them back to back.  (There's probably an even easier way to do this.)

I agree though, most of the effects on the wish list can be done utilizing Nutcracker's spirals and adjusting the speed accordingly.

If you want a gap of no color, I've had success making chases where I space the colors utilizing black as a color.  For instance you could do red, black, black, green, black, black, etc.

a new effect is coming called pulse. it will do back and forth effects exactly set to the music. look for it in next 1-2 weeks.

By the end of the month I should have my pixel tree set and my window frames hooked up for testing.  All this sounds great.

Thanks for all the info.

I cannot get Spiral to do all of the speeds that I would like. IE very fast chase. It does work, but not the way that I would like a chase to work. I do like the list that Jim  has made! Looking forward to Pulse. Great job guys! Keep it coming!!  <res.

I will probably make a single strand effect class in the next month so that everything you want is in one place. i think the point is you can get many effects right now on your eaves, arches.

i will expand my arches this year (Maybe have 10-20 new ones). i have effects planed for those for this season

VERY excited!!  I'll have 3 arches this year- but they will be the bestest arches in the neighborhood!!

Thanks Sean and team working on all these awesome effects.

Oh and I'm outlining my roof as well in pixels...it is basically just like a big window frame....very excited indeed.

I outlined my roof in metal square pixels last year (60 by 50 by 60 by 50). Used four SSCs and one Smart String Hub.  Loved it. Didn't use xLights though. I used Twinkle a lot. Impressed the viewers but now it will be better.
