How do I just turn something on/off with only a fade? No special effect.

So I'm working on trying to sequence something, but I don't need special effects for the entire song.  Occasionally I just want it to come on like a normal string in Vixen.  How can I do this?

use color wash, select one color and then add fade in and fade out to it
