Reprogramming a Lynx DMX dongle for pixelnet?
« on: November 18, 2013, »
Hello.

I have a Lynx dongle flashed for DMX usage. I'd like to use this with a pixelnet active hub, so I believe that it needs to be reprogrammed. Is that a service that is available to purchase?

Thanks in advance.

I believe you would just need to find someone on this list that may be close to you and private message them to see if you can ship it.  You will just need to pay for shipping both ways.  Please see the wiki article for a list of members that can reprogram chips.

This is not the proper area to post requests like this and this post should be moved to the Dongle section.

Agree

Since we don't charge for the programming service. Just mailing costs round trip normally unless you find someone close enough to drive.

Not a problem.

A couple of things to consider:
1. If you are planning to continue in the light show hobby. You really should buy a pickit3 and adapter board or more. They are not really that $$
2. You might find it hard or not possible to program some lynx DMX controllers using the active hub. (one reason for #1)
3. Firmware gets updated so keep sending out pics gets costly and if you have a pic failure during the show your show could go dark.
4. Its fun and cool programming the PIC (micro controllers) yourself.

either way its a hobby so Have Fun

I agree with Rick.  It is fun and worth the money if you plan on continuing the hobby.  I am new to the hobby and found the instructions to be fairly simple to follow.

Thank you for the tips. The intention is to continue, so the pickit is probably a good investment. Would this kit work?

Yes that will work.  It includes the ICSP28 adapter which is used to program the chip for the dongle.

and - j1Sys is a long-time and reputable dealer for the Pickit3 and sockets. Highly recommended. (no, it isn't me!)

As you know, there is a big difference between programming a device and loading a program on a device.   >:D

I didn't want to confuse the issue by saying Flashing the pic. Chris would have ideas of light bulbs going off in his brain  >:D
