i thought splitting the cable might introduce issues with the signals going in two directions.  without getting too technical, the term ringing comes to mind.

Both of the 16 port hub types have a termination resistor and regenerate the signal for each row of RJ45's s as long as you use two different rows, signal reflection will not be an issue.  Even if you put both on one row it should still work or the SSC's wouldn't work either.

i was referring to people just putting a "y" adapter on a couple of cat5 cables...

If you use a short stubby RJ45 splitter directly plugged into one device and not on the end of another cable, then you would probably be OK, but I would beware of the RJ45 splitters with a 1-foot pigtail attached.
