LSP voice tags won't work
« on: May 11, 2009, »
I was trying to figure out the voice command stuff last night, but I couldn't seem to get it working.  Any pointers on this?  I'm wondering if it is a part of XP that I do not have installed.

For XP, the voice command capability comes with the installation of MS Office 2003.  You must also install .net framework 3.0 or later to use the voice command capability in XP.  If you have Vista, voice command is built into the operating system.

.net framework 3.0 can be installed from here ...

.net framework 3.5 is the latest and can be installed from here...

These are normally installed by Windows in the automatic update process if you have it turned on.  Let me know if you have any other issues.

Ryan,

I checked and I have Office 2003 with the 3.0 .net installed.  Is there anyway you know to check that I have voice command capability enabled?  It's possible I did not install that piece of Office 2003.

I do not have an XP machine with Office 2003 on it so I am going to be very limited on my help in this area.  However, I did do a quick search to see what I could find.
-----How to Install Speech Recognition-----
To install speech recognition, follow these steps:
Click Start , and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
Click Change or Remove Programs.
In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Office 2003, and then click Change.
Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.
In the Features to install list, expand Office Shared Features.
Expand Alternative User Input.
Click the Speech icon, and then click Run all from my computer.
Click Update to install speech components.

If you open MS Word and the click on the Tools menu you should see a speech option.  By clicking on this it should install the speech recognition option.

here is the link I found...

When using voice recognition, you really should do at least some training of the microphone. This will let you know that everything is working correctly and it also trains you in how to properly talk to it. The more training you do the more accurate it will get. The basic training takes about 15 minutes. But it will make a big difference.

If speech is installed, go to Start>control panel > Speech. That will show you how everything is set up.

First select the Configure Microphone. It will adjust the volume controls for it.
Then select Train Profile and select a training session.

It will have you read the text and highlight the words as it recognizes them.

I've gotten all that done through Speech, but I still can't get it to work in Word either, so something is out of whack.  I'm going to upgrade to .net 3.5, restart again and see if anything changes.

ok, have you confirmed that the voice commad opto is enabled in the options/configuration screen and on the options toolbar?

once it is, you should be able to say the designated voice tag (within a sequence). you will  herer a confmation  "ding" when it is recognized.

I will try to add this to the "How To..." list

thanks,
David

I'm having issues getting the voice recognition to work on my PC.  I think I might have disabled the language bar sometime in the past because I found it annoying and now I can't seem to get it working again.  At this point I am exhausted all the options I can find, so I am not going to be pursuing this further at this point.

Still a very cool option.

Hi Ron,

I just need to ask

Did you right click on the toolbar and click on the sub-menu Toolbars and then see if the Language bar option is there? If not then I guess you removed it in the control panel add/remove programs.

Rick,

Yes, I checked there.  I actually went into Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, selected Office 2003 and went through the process of adding in the extra features to get speech recognition.  I went through the process of training my microphone and everything seemed to work.  However, now when I get into Word if can select the Tools, Speech option and nothing happens.  I can't find the language toolbar anywhere either.

I seem to recall that it irritated me so much when I installed Office 2003 that I did something drastic in the registry to remove it.  Oh well.

I've tried a host of other ideas as well to get it back and nothing has worked.
