with prices like this... Could power for each string be built in at the hub level?

Those are not power supplies, they are buck converters and only put out 3A.  If you were to implement 16 of them (one per output) then the cost would be $160 which is way more than most of the PC power supplies that we use and take up a whole lot more space.

Also the max input is 35volts so you still need a power supply to get from 120 to less than 35.

I am still working on a solution for that issue.

Cool to here your looking into that issue.

@tbone321
Check the listing again, its 10 bucks for quantity 10...
So 16 of these is about 17 bucks.

My mistake but it also says that only 10 lots are avaliable so when they run out, who knows how much more they would cost, especially if there is a sudden demand for them.  The other issue with them as RJ mentioned, they need 35V or less so a power supply of some type will still be needed on top of these.  I have yet to find a DC power supply that can give more bang for the buck than a PC power supply.  Even AC landcape transformers cost more and give much less.

Isn't the point with these that you lessen voltage drop, and can reach longer distances when you have a higher current ?
So, you use a central 24 V power supply, and have these little units at the end of the power cable to reduce whats left of the voltage to give pure 5 V  ( or 12 V).
Ray Wu has them at 10 for $16.

There are plenty of issues, and few workable solutions.
The path in between is full of interesting, well what if moments.
and 99% of the rest is alot of hard work by skilled people.

Meanwhile, I'm probably going to use some of these in a solar backup battery bank project.
I can think of lots of reasons to keep 10 lying around... Especially at $1.xx a piece...
