It's over
« on: January 01, 2015, »

Last show was last night and today is demolition day.  I got 87% taken down and put away  and it drizzle all day. New Years day has always been the day when things come down, if only they would go up as fast. The show didn't go as planned but still a success. I got to start earlier this year but a said that last year. Anybody else start their tear down yet???

I never end until the weekend after new years.  I also usually leave all or many of my lights up a a week or two so I can play with new sequences, software, hardware in a live environment.  The lights only run if I am outside while doing the testing.

Last night my other half strongly suggested that I do tear-down today.  I was able to video my last 7 sequences last night, and I didn't have a lot of visitors, so I shutdown my Pi-s and pulled the power.

(there was also a threat of a cold spell with a lot of rain, etc. and I didn't think it good to encourage people to come out to see a light show...)

anyway...  rain and near-freezing cold today and I did nothing with the equipment today.  (unfortunately I was too late to bring in my new (indoor-only) fog machine before the rain.  hopefully it dries out. :)

maybe tomorrow it will clear up enough to bring things in, and start work on the '15 show. :)

I am more like Jim. Show is still on, will take most all of it down this weekend (window frames and snowmen stay lit a while) - snowmen are the wife's favorites and in fact there is always one in the living room year round (fabric type not a plastic snowmen). The window frames stay up until Valentines day. If fact my frames are basically on from before Halloween and stay on until after Valentines day every year. These nodes are the first version and first run from Ray Wu so they are old and have a LOT of hours on them. One frame doesn't go into storage and is used for testing during the "off" season.

Yeah I know WAY TOO MUCH info.  <fp.
(I guess the pain meds are working today and not putting me in a bad mood)

My display decided to end itself tonight.  Went out to dinner and when I got home, most of the display was out.  Went into the garage and a 60A 220V breaker was blown.  Turned it back on and the power controller was making a horrible grown and a lot of the display still out.  Shut it back down and went outside and found a 3 way cube and an extension cord melted together and the lawn scorched.  It was too dark to hunt down the problem and the season is over anyway.  Rain is expected all weekend so all of the inflatables will come down Friday as well as anything else I have time to take down prior to the rain.  I will look to see what failed and may restore that part of the display to run for the last weekend since I will no be doing any teardown in the rain.  I am just glad that I came home to a burned up cord and not a burned up house.  A redesign of the power distribution is in order and will happen before any other displays are put up.

i would have turned my show off last night but i had a few LOR guys come by tonight and one more coming tomorrow. tomorrow night is the last ran show. i will leave things up for a week or so because i want a guy to come back and shoot more drone video of my show. supposed to rain saturday so tear down will have to wait.

I usually keep the lights running till three kings day (Jan 6th). As the number of cars begin to dwindle after New Years, I start doing some experimenting with new props and/or sequences for next season. So not really in a hurry to pull everything down on a specific date.

Also, I always try to do a full on session and get any burnt out sections of LED fixed before boxing them up. And never put stuff away wet. Wait for a dry day.

I've now got 2/3 of my display down and brought indoors.  If the weather holds out tomorrow I'll have it all down.
next is the sorting and putting stuff away so that I can reclaim my work area -- well, my wife's work area.  she needs space to wrap a truck with vinyl and my cables, controllers, and props are interfering. :)

Some day I'm going to come down south and live near you guys.  Up north we have snow and -15 temps.  But i guess I will have props to test things on for the next 3 months.  >:(

I am sitting here reading about everyoNe who has gotten all their eaquipment packed away and I aM getting very sad. We had a bad ice storm just after Christmas. since then i spend nearly every day triming up the trees and hauling off the broken limbs.
After 7 trips to haul off broken limbs I had to spend one day repairing the sunroof on my wifes SUV because the dealre cound not get to ti for 7 WEEKS and taking down the lights for a l=elderly neighbor. As it stands Hhope to get the lights down on the 20th.
wow, . . . thanks for letting me vent. I feel much better now!

Moving to Louisiana....I've come up with a solution to my procrastination.  I leave most of my display up and it turns into a Margi Gras Light Show!!!  HA HA HA....any excuse for blinky!
