cat 5 to 3 pin xlr
« on: June 24, 2009, »
is there a pinout located somewhere to identify how to make this cable? I am just going to have one made for me but want to be certain the +/- corresponds correct on the cat 5 end when using the express boards.

Just yesterday, I printed out Keith's reference for a project I might start. So the two links in the two threads sort of give differing data (3-wire vs. 4-wire). Which is right, either or both?

I really don't know for sure since I don't use the XLR connectors anywhere, but maybe the LOR DMX-doc may fill in the pieces for you.

You really need 2 wires for DMX  + and -.  The extra wire or wires are ground.  Which are typically used with shielded cable not Cat5.

I use DMX for work all of the time.

Keith's link is correct

DMX currently only uses three pins - Four would be scroller/ColorBlast cabling (and they are pinned differently)

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but in Keith's drawing, I don't see the GROUND connection. Would that be pins 7 and/or 8 or is it not needed?

I think that pin 3 is the ground, cat5 pins 7 & 8, but the Lynx dongle does not use it.
