FWIW, TI had the TLC5940NT back ordered to Jan. 12 and when I checked on Wednesday, they'd moved the date to Jan. 30.

And my Mouser backorder from 9/30/09 is still unfilled.  They just moved the date to Feb 9 for shipping.

And my order, direct from TI, has been pushed out to Feb. 12.

I did a quick search through Octopart and found that a few appear to be in stock at

The price appears to be $6.21 each.  Hopefully there is some kind of qty discount but you won't know till you connect with them.

Larry

I just rread the previous posts and saw the minimum order requirement...     still an option but the premium price and minimum requirment make this one a tuff bite to swallow.   Larry.

Hi,
I notified on TI site, the TLC5940NT is a discontinued product.
Production will be only for spares with limited qty (existing running products, but not anymore for standard production)... FYI...

So,  in theory, the TLC5941NT can match, but there are 2 important parameters
to take care... As we do not have the schematics of the MR16, the major differences
are : less mA ,   pin 27 and pin 19. Means we need to know how these pins are wired with 5940 NT and check if the internal EEprom was really used on MR16 controller or not.
So investigation to do on actual PCB.

Now for the Less current on 5941, if it's enough to activate the gate of the N Mosfeet, so it can match too..

For moment i will need to check and update you...

Maybe someone have done this too?

Henri

I use the 5940 on my Blizzard units and got an email from TI saying they were gone.  The one major difference is the output per channel is lower, but other than that it is pretty much the same.

Agree with you...
I think we can use the TLC5941Nt instead TLC5940...
I'm waiting the parts from Mouser, and i will update you.

So main PB, i'm Frenchy guy, so shipment will take some weeks..

My personnal thinking : why TI decided to stop this device?
Means new one will replace it and will request new development?
Strange, but this is the reality....

I'm very glad as Mouser got an agenda for the ordered POs, but i'm not very confident, why they stopped such sucessfull chip...

For my part, i decided to go to full LED Xmas design this year, and MR16 board seems to be the best we can found today...

Ok, you have also the alternative to go to "H.Hölscher" device, where you can go to 64 channels, after making your own design, but without dimmer option....

So i'm very happy to join this community, even if i'm located in France...

Thanks to all you for your inpunts...

Best regards from France...

Henri ;)

I should clarify my previous post as I was at work and had to type fast...haha

The pin outs of the 5941 are exactly the same as the 5940.  The outputs handle currents that are 20 mA less than the 5940.  There also is a different with the EEPROM, which I don't remember exactly but as long  as RJ isn't using that, the 5941 should be fine.  Of course RJ will have the final say on that.

As posted earlier on I think it should work fine. Just can't promise till someone tries it.

My order for the TLC5940-NT from TI has now been pushed out to Feb. 24 (there was a Feb. 18 push-out in there that I didn't chronicle earlier).

I had a big (for me) order at the Mouse that I did just a minute ago and I threw in a TLC5941-NT and will substitute it on a known working Lynx MR16 board when the guy in the brown truck stops by.

Hi Any Feedback on positive try?

I got my parts from Mouser, mounted the first Board but i was blocked on progamming the PIC 18F1220. I have an universal programmer (TOP2049), but not so universal than that... It cannot programm this one ( a lot of PIC possibilities excepts this 18Fxx series)...
So waiting my pickit 2 from Mouser now...

So i have TLC 5941NT arrived and no possibilty to try it...

I  expect this try in one week....

Cheers... Henri

Henri:

The box from Mouser with the TLC5941-NT is sitting here -- I haven't had a chance to open it up and catalog the contents (busy week).

I should get to it in a day or two and give you the word one way or another.

Keith:

Yes, the movies. But to take a day off in the middle of the week, you have to do all the Wednesday stuff on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, thereby eating into your hobby time.

Life's a beach.
