CAT cable mod for LE to LOR connection
« on: November 15, 2009, »
I apologize for bothering everyone on this because I know we are all in preparations for blinky go-live, but I am asking for a clarification of the pin layout for the end that is going to go into my LOR controller.  I simply don't fully understand the wiki documentation.  And I'm looking at the picture of the adapter and I can't tell what goes where.

I think it might help if I could get what color wire goes into each pin, from 1 - 8,  on the connector that will go into the LOR controller.

If you know, would you mind explaining?  Thank you in advance for your time at this time of year.

In the lightorama pdf file, I need to do the "T-568A" configuration on page 3?

I couldn't figure out the pins outs either on my LOR equipment, so I just bought the DMX adapter.  Works great!!

If I'm going from the lynx dongle to the LE to the LOR, I have no XLR connection to go from.  What did you have to need this adapter?

RJ's Lynx stuff uses pins 1  and 2 (orange/white and orange respectively)
LOR  stuff uses pins 4 and 5 (blue and blue/white respectively)

Situation 1:
If you are using the Lynx DMX dongle, data is running over the the orange pair, but the LOR stuff is listening on the blue pair.

In order for the LOR stuff to get the data, you have to get the data from the orange pair to the blue pair.

Situation 2:
If you are running a Lynx unit after a LOR unit, then data is leaving the LOR unit on the blue pair, but the Lynx unit is listening on the orange pair.

In order for the LOR stuff to get the data, you have to get the data from the blue pair to the orange pair.

Just remember that the pairs are crossed.

So you are saying that if I am going from an LE to a LOR, as long as I put the orange/white wire in pin 4 and the orange wire in pin 5, what I do with the rest of the wires doesn't matter?

If you are making your own cables, I think this is what you are asking.

One end:
Pin 1 - Orange/White
Pin 2 - Orange
Pin 3 - Green/White
Pin 4 - Blue
Pin 5 - Blue/White
Pin 6 - Green
Pin 7 - Brown/White
Pin 8 - Brown

Other end:
Pin 1 - Blue
Pin 2 - Blue/White
Pin 3 - Green/White
Pin 4 - Orange/White
Pin 5 - Orange
Pin 6 - Green
Pin 7 - Brown/White
Pin 8 - Brown

Correct me if I am wrong, anyone.

And you can use as many of these as you need to go from Lynx to LOR to Lynx to LOR, etc....

I believe this is correct.

That's exactly what I was looking for.  And "one end" would be the end in the LE and the "other end" would be the end in the LOR, right?

It would not matter which end went where.  You should mark these cables so as not to confuse them with regular cat 5 cables or it will drive you crazy trying to figure out what is wrong.

just make a few of these and use one on the input.  if you swap Lynx/LOR again,  you'll have to add another on on the input of the next device.

Thanks, everyone.  I plan on this being a 1-year thing.

I'm going to sell my LOR after the season is done and use that money for more LYNX stuff or more lights.  RJ's blog posting about this "director" hardware looks quite interesting as well!!!

Just a quickie color example.

The X is a crossover adapter shown in the earlier posts and the Wiki.
