Pickit 2 & Clones
« on: January 05, 2010, »
I am  lookng at Pickit 2s and see that there are a lot of clones out there. What are the pros and cons of the clones besides the lower price? Should I stick to the real thing?

Gary,

I would suggest for ease of use buy only an actual Pickit 2

Some of the clones claim they support a chip (ie the chip in the dongle), but they don't.  Pay the extra $ for the pickit2

I've been researching this very thing. As someone told me, I've probably spent more time looking around for a clone or way to program these PIC24s than it's worth. They're right, too.

Seems there's a new ICSP protocol for some of the new PICs. I know my JDM doesn't support it, so that's out. And a lot of the clones, even some from the original schematics and firmware, don't always include what's needed.

So when I can, it'll be the PicKit2 for me.

My brother kept buying cheap generic programmers and would run into chips he couldn't program.  The PIC for the dongle for one.  So for Christmas I got him a PICKit2.
