Is this dongle ruined?
« on: October 11, 2010, »
Hubby is trying to build our first dongle and messed up. He put two capacitors in the wrong spot. He then slightly melted the board getting them out and putting something else there. Wondering if we need to reorder all the parts we used so far and start over or whether this might be salveagable? Not sure what to do here. Any help appreciated. I will attach a photo of what it looks like and thanks in advance!

Greetings,,,

Hard to tell with one side only, but couldn't see anything obviously not usable.  You might want to go ahead and try it.

looks like the 100uf capacitor may be backwards too.

Doesn't look like any of the traces on the bottom of the pcb are damaged.  Hard to tell if any of the pads got lifted from the pics though.  I attached a pic of a couple of potential problems though.

After taking a look at my Dongle and comparing it to the picture, the 100Uf does look backwards. beside that everything looks okay.  suggestion before continuing to solder, solder all the small parts first then move up the next tallest one in size, the tallest part should be the last one to solder.
Just a suggestion when you start soldering your express.

Thanks. Hubby says there is some pad lifting. Not sure if that means it's best to scrap it.

You shouldn't need to scrap the board just because a pad is lifted.  Worst case is that you have use a wire jumper between points.  If the pad is still making good electrical contact with the next point, then you are still good.

Before you decide to scrap it you could check for continuity from the pad to the next device and if it shows good you wont have to use a jumper or scrap it just a thought and it does appear that the 100 uf is backwards you might want to double check it

You've got the two 8 pin sockets in backwards, too.

Not to worry, though. You can still put the two chips in correctly. (2 wrongs will make a right)
