Change of MOSFET
« on: January 06, 2011, »
I was wondering if it is possible to change the MOSFET used in the MR16 as its so expensive, I want to use my MR16 for RGB lighting but I've heard running the MR16 without the MOSFET can cause the Driver to overheat, would it be possible to use mouser part 863-MPS2222AG instead it can handle my power requirements and are a lot less expensive than the MOSFET's?

Thanks
Steve

It will overheat if you pull more current that it is rated for total.

As you can imagine I can not redesign equipment for each users needs. The tranisitors you point out are not a replacement of the Mosfets in the controller.

So I could run 120ma out of each output with no issues?

No I did not say that.

There is a lot more to it than that as output current is but one factor in the picture.  You have to be careful of the Power dissipaition total in the chip.

see the datasheet

Page 15 has the formula you need to figure out if you can.

The Mosfets job is to offload this to them so it is not an issue.
