What size is the pvc pipe.  I am guessing 3".  I bought a golbe today and it has a 4 inch opening.  So would a 4" to 3" reducer be in order?

Yes you are correct it is 3 inch pipe and 3" to 4" reducer, but measure your globes and match to it and make sure you get globes with a neck on them it makes it easier securing the globes

I did something very similar but used some 3 channel DMX controllers form China driving some RGB LED modules from bigclive.

Watching this reminds me of what Disney did in California for their World of Color show. In the area you stand to watch they have globes, that at the beginning of the show they keep a single color designating the area, Red, Blue and Yellow. After the show, they go through a color changing program just to look cool. Also, that show is so cool as it is, and I would recommend checking it out if ever there.

I may have to attempt making some of these, as it is a great idea, and seems like a cheap thing with great effect.

funny, you should ask, i was playing around with my idea on this just an hour ago...

i bought a 6inch ceiling light with pull chain from walmart for about 5-6 dollars. (it comes with the glass globe)

just the globe part would sit atop a 4 inch pvc coupler, on top of a 5ft section of 4inch pvc pipe.

inside the globe, i'd run about 3 or 4 smart string squares, or rectangles.
one works, but 2 or more makes it a little brighter.

Chris,
What smart string squares or rectangles would work with the SSC's and do i need cat 5 to connect them together?
I plan on making 30 of them to outline my yard. Oh and how many hubs would i also need? And one more question what and how many power supplies. Sorry for so many questions. My first time going RGB.

to be safe, i'd run a hub in a battery box, then a cat5 wire to the base, (make a hole, or slit for the wire to get inside the pole), then up the pole to the globe. then have your ssc break out into the nodes in the globe...

i'm looking into having nodes on the side of the poles iteself in like a candy cane spiral, i'm still working on what i'm going to do with that.

the hub in the battery box would handle a large number of poles with just nodes in the globe.

having nodes on the side would just depend on what nodes, and how many

I ran 16 Northpoles off a single hub last year.  Each pole had 6 rectangular modules in it.  I connected the modules directly to the SSC and ran a cat5 cable up the middleof the pole to the pigtail on the SSC. The modules were glued to a 1" piece of class 200 PVC the SSC was housed inside the 1" PVC.  I used acrylic globes for a few reasons 1 being a safety issue 2 they diffuse the light better than the glass and 3 they are cheaper.  The poles were supported by driving a 1" pipe into the grass the pipe had coro rings on it making it fit the 3" pipe like a perfect sleeve.

They can be seen in the background of this photo.

Is this not just a HolidayCoro MegaBall upside down? You wouldn't even need the cap.

it's just a globe that lights up from a light source...    as long as it lights up, and fits inside
