Unofficial updated Aether parts ledgend
« on: January 20, 2011, »
Hi,

This is late for most of you, but I just got my kits recently  so I did it now.  Maybe this will help a future coop (or save RJ some time).

In prepping for my builds, I was having a hard time keeping track of what went where (great videos of assembly but bad memory on my part) so I updated the Aether Parts Ledgend doc to have most all of the parts and locations and part numbers.  I'm not saying RJ originally did a bad job, I am just saying he obviously did not have the TIME to put in ALL the helpful details.

RJ, if you disagree with what I did to YOUR doc, please feel free to delete it.

Kirk

No if it is accurate (sure it is) I think it is great! I just do not want any user confused and ordering parts for it thinking they can get pcb for it.

You are correct about the time. I have to spread it thin sometimes to get everything done.

There are no PCBS for the Aether made avaliable except through kits which contain all the parts. I do not know when another one will be.

Yeah, I put a lot of extra notes on my rather sparse printed Word document when I was assembling my Aethers back in November.

Like the original ledgend, it is just an assembly aid with all the part locations and ids listed.  I wanted to save future builders some time.

I found the "bright buggers" comment to be especially helpful.   ;)

Did NOT want anyone confusing them with the indicator LEDs  ;D

I was going to leave them off, but I wanted to at least touch on all the major components and when they got soldered.  That was the best description of them that I could think of at the time that I could write down on a family-friendly document.  :P

Kirk, in the through hole section You have the 7812 described as socketed - should be the 485 chip on the line above.

OK fixed the SOCKETED comment being on the wrong line AND added assembly details around the diodes and constant current chips orientations as it was SO confusing when I did my assembly yesterday (verified with RJ- thanks again RJ!!).  Made a few other tweaks as well.  I reposted against the original topic.  Get it there.

I must say DIY SMD is pretty awesome.  I also must say hand soldering without a solder mask sucks.  I made a mess around the temp sensor on one board, but I have it electrically working as verified with my ohm meter.  I will find out tonight if it works as I ran out of time last night.

I agree; I find SMT assembly to be easier than thru-hole, at least until you get to 0402 sized parts...
