Yes, this year I have 9 x 60lb bags on the star and the star and frame probably weigh 60 lbs ... so around 600 lbs.

Since I know what my max wind is each year ... and its usualy 40mph or less ... and I've basically survived that a few times with zero movement ... I'm
not terribly worried.

If mother nature decides to bring a wind that 60-80mph, all bets are off.

I'm just not sure how much a hole in the middle would help in that worst case scenario.

Be careful putting that kind of weight on your roof.  Depending on the age of your house, and the quality of the construction, 600 + pounds in a small area could get ugly!
