Comm Port Errors
« on: April 24, 2011, »
I'm getting so sick and tired of getting a com port error when trying to play sequences with Vixen.  At first it was just a couple sequences and now it seems it's all of them.  I know my com port is 5 and I can run other programs to test this and there is no problems.

So what gives?  This is on the desktop.  On the laptop it's with all of my sequences now but I can play others.

What am I doing wrong?  This keeps up and I'm going to another program. I just want to make sure my LE builds are communicating like they should be and I can't even do that in this program!!!   :-[

Dean,

I am not sure what specifically you have going wrong, but I will tell you what I see all the time.  First, check your computer.  I have found that MOST of the issues I have are with the settings on my COM port on the system that I am connecting the DMX Dongle to.  Make sure it is set to 115200 baud (usually this where I see problems as I believe the default setting for win is something like 9600).  Make sure everything is set correctly on your COM port.

If this doesn't do it, let us know and we will look at something else.

Hi Dean,

Make sure you don't have DMX checked on the Add-ins menu

Vixen is trying to open the com port and its already open.

Are you using a Profile? Did you makes any changes to it?

See if that helps

After rebooting the PC and then opening the program to you receive the error? Please explain when you are getting the error and when you don't.

O.K. For example..  Just plugged in the Dongle.. Fired up Vixen and attempted to run a sequence that's in my list...

Setup the plug-ins to use the dongle and hit play and the first error is:

First Error Box:
Enntec USB Pro:

(Router - Startup)
Access to the port 'COM5' is denied.

Second error box:
Access to the port 'COM5' is denied.

Execution is denied.

This is the first time I tried anything today.

This is not a profile thing either.  I had to set it up for this sequence in order to see anything from my LE's.  This is a common thing now. And rebooting doesn't always solve this issue.  Actually more times than not it won't solve it.  But last night at one point everything worked fine.

And just so it's known...  I can exit Vixen and fire up the "Start Pattern" program and everything runs fine.  Even RJ's program the DMX Deck and everything runs fine.  So it's something with Vixen.  Whether its a setting of mine or not I do not know but something is messing with things.

Ahhh  no I did not.  I know that is checked right now. hmmmm  Lemme go and give that a shot.  but o.k. wait...  lemme go and try it and go from there....

Huh... first pass solved it now lemme go and try a few other sequences and see how it goes....  What's the difference of having that checked or not.  I was under the impression it had to be checked.  Interesting...

Never ever have the evil DMX box checked!!!!!!!!!!   ;D

It is for open DMX units and will cause your issue. Good call Rick!

Gentlemen, I am having the same issue but mine is with com1... I went through the "trouble shooting" ideas that you guys suggested but continue with the same error.... This is a new computer and has never had a dongle hooked to it will that make a difference?

Normally Windows reservers Com1 for a serial port (if its there or not)

Did you install the FTDI drivers and or confirm that the dongle is using Com1?

Are you just playing with Vixen to see what it can do or are trying to control lights?

If just trying out Vixen then disable or remove the Dongle from the Attached Plugins

If you are trying to control lights using a dmx dimmer (i.e.: Lynx Express, etc) then you need a Lynx dongle connected and if its the usb one then you need to follow the directions in the wiki You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
