USB Dongle PIC needed.
« on: July 18, 2011, »
Hi Everyone,

I finally finished my first DIY USB dongle build, however, it needs PIC Programing.  Does anybody in here live in Cherry Hill, NJ would be able to help me with programing this device.  I don't have the PIC Programing tool and am not planning to buy one any time soon, since I only need to do "one" USB Dogle at this time.

Thank you in advance.

Dan.

Hi Dan

I don't live in Cherry Hill but I do live in Deptford

I would be happy to program the pic for you. Just need to know if you want it for DMX or Pixelet

Cheers

I'm planning to use it with Lynx Express (bought 2 LE ).  I'm newbie and based on my understand, please correct me, that it should be programmed with "DMX" as Pixelet is for "LED Smart Strings" right?

Thanks.

Dan.

As the addiction grows, don't hesitate to buy a pickit.  I would buy the pickit3 and buy it from j1sys.  The cost will become rounding error in your overall addiction expenses and the convenience to be able to do your own will be worth far more than the cost.  I even had to reprogram all my LE pics last year to fix a problem that many folks and myself reported that caused a new hex to be released.

The Pickit 3 from j1sys isn't all that expensive compared to the thousands you might spend on the lights and controllers. I thought it was worth buying one just to not have to hassle with sending my PICs away to get programmed. And with how new the SSCs are, there will surely be a couple revisions to fix problems that people are finding out once they get everything up and running. That is just the way of any hardware, the drivers need tweaked to account for unforeseen examples.

I got the Pickit 3 from j1sys from his ebay store, and after about 10-15 min learning the software, had all 16 of my SSC pics and USB dongle pic programmed in less than 10 min.  I put the test firmware on the SSC pics, as I will be building them later this week, then will reflash with current firmware.

Had it in 2 days from j1sys with all the adapter boards/sockets and required materials - easy setup....

Hi Dan

Everyone is making a good point (almost too good) about getting a pickit. Please get one if you can but at the same time don't feel pressure to buy one if you are not ready. Me along with a whole list of members will gladly program a pic for you at no charge (besides postage to and from) So let me know what you want to do either here or in a PM.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for the offering.  I am sold for getting the USB Dongle.  Since I just successfully built my first Lynx Express last night, I feel I can do more now :), so getting a USB Dongle would be a good idea.....

Ohhh gezzzz, I'm already addicting to this now.... LOL :)

Is the one I got, PicKit3 w/adapters - $76.95 + shipping.  Got it in 2 days from him, and only took 10-15 min to learn to use it.  Nice unit and adapter boards....

Will be able to program anything here....

That is my recommendation....
